Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
If you want to dive into a timeless world, Music of the Ottoman Empire: Turkish Classical Music could be your ticket to ride. Its producer, Erkan Dedeoglu, is also its presiding soloist on the kanun--the Middle East's plucked version of the European zither--and he's a real virtuoso. Indeed, he's joined by several more such beings--on the tambur lute, the kemancheh fiddle and the clarinet--but they are much less showy than their European counterparts, going for expressiveness rather than brilliance of effect. The clarinettist has a Balkan bounce, and the kemancheh player approximates so closely to the human voice that at times you really wouldn't know the sound wasn't that of a singer. Each of the 10 pieces here begins with a taksim, an improvised solo which precedes the full orchestra, and each follows a traditional pattern. Mr Dedeoglu is keen for us to know that each harmony has a specific healing power, which physicians in the Middle East have been harnessing for centuries. Got a headache, or a bad back? Surrender here, and see what this music can do. --Michael Church
