Product Description

Best friends Kate (Marley Shelton), Paige (Denise Richards), Dorothy (Jessica Capshaw) and Lily (Jessica Cauffiel) are terrified after another of their group, Shelly (Katherine Heigl), is found murdered. When the girls then begin receiving death threats themselves, they suspect the killer might be a boy they teased mercilessly at school. The boy in question hasn't been seen for years, and when they discover that he has undergone plastic surgery, suddenly all the men in their lives come under suspicion.

From Amazon.co.uk

A moderately enjoyable by-the-numbers slasherflick, Valentine is more memorable for incidental characters and details than it is for its central plot or the various twists director Jamie Blanks and his large team of writers inflict on us. Years ago, in sixth grade, causal cruelty by a group of girl friends to an outsider boy had, accidentally, terrible consequences for him... and now someone disguised in a cherub mask is killing them, one after another. Most of them have more or less messy relationships--Kate (Marley Shelton) is dating the charming alcoholic Adam (David Boreanaz) and Dorothy (Jessica Capshaw) has attracted the exploitative conman Campbell; as the bitchy bad girl Paige, Denise Richards has a memorable sexual charisma. All of the performances have enough depth to be readable for subtextual clues as to who the killer really is. Some sequences--the pursuit of Lily through a maze on the walls of which highly sexualised advertising images are flickeringly projected--have an impact which, sustained, would have made for a far more interesting film.

On the DVD: The DVD has a commentary by Jaime Blanks in which he talks frankly about some of the working constraints, a club reel of the song "Opticon" by Orgy, a short behind-the-scenes documentary and subtitles in English, Arabic, Romanian and Bulgarian. The film is presented in a widescreen 2.35:1 visual ratio and has excellent Dolby Sound which ensures that the vigorous dance soundtrack never drowns the snappy dialogue. --Roz Kaveney

I think Valentine is a vastly underrated, thrilling horror movie. At its root, it is obviously a slasher film, but this movie features great pacing, true suspense, quite effective musical transitions, and, most importantly, a terrific finish. Valentine not only has a recognizable plot, it incorporates some dandy instances of symmetry that really help tie everything together in the end. I wish I could tell you just how satisfying the ending is. I had my suspicions about the identity of the killer, but several late twists made me doubt my theory, change it, and finally just applaud the filmmakers for essentially keeping me in the dark up until the very end. I know the clues are there all along, and many people may discover the secret well before the final revelation, but this experienced horror fan was kept off-balance throughout. I also have to admit that this movie made me jump a couple of times (and I can’t say that about very many horror movies). With significant help from the musical score, suspenseful scenes were really presented well—just long enough to make you grit your teeth but not long enough to become tiresome. In trailers, the movie looks like another Scream (and there are definite similarities), but Valentine stands head and shoulders above the great majority of slasher films.
A lot of horror films feature attractive women, but Valentine is in a class all by itself. What you get here is Katherine Heigl, Marley Shelton, Jessica Cauffiel, the charming Jessica Capshaw, and—drum roll please—Denise Richards. Denise Richards is absolutely stunning in this movie—the smoldering, sultry looks, the prayer-answering hot tub scene, and the bedroom scene I won’t even attempt to describe.

this film was really good, very scary and chilling.
the story line was fabulas and it really gets you thinking about the human mind, and that a person could do all those things, and really gets you think that maybe you should be nice to people.
the twistat the end was really good, and you wonder how the ending, ended like it did (you'll understand when you see it.)
it is really good and anybody would really like it, especially the girls ;)
this is a must watch film and you will enjoy it.

This film had a good story line and a few gripping scenes that you can't take your eyes off. I wouldn't watch it again though as it wasn't quite what i expected. It had a spectacular twist at the end and i liked the way it left you in suspense. The part where one of the girls is runing through a maze of video walls was terrific. How ever the part at the beginning where the girl was on her own in a morgue you could guesse that something was going to happen, but i did like the part where she hid in the body bag and you weren't sure if she was going to be killed or not.To be quite honest i wouldn't call this film a horror as there weren't enough scary parts, to me it was more like a thriller and even though i think it was a bit predictable in some parts it was a good film overall.

I'm not sure whether this will have been changed by now, but if you do decide to buy this film (and its not actually that bad) be warned: DO NOT READ THE PLOT SUMMARY ON THE BACK OF THE BOX. When me and my mates rented it, we spent most of the film waiting for some twist, which never came. Why? Because the spiel on the back of the box TELLS YOU WHO THE KILLER IS!!!!

So be warned...

I watched this a few years back but as it was Valentine's it was time to watch it again as my memory was a little hazy.

It is quite frightening to think that, if the slasher genre is a portrayal of reality, high school kids in the USA often pick on the "runt" to the point that that person becomes seriously deranged and could return to have their revenge by slaughtering their tormentors many years later. I do love the slasher genre and the various ones I have enjoyed range from I Know What You Did Last Summer to Sorority Row, Black Xmas (the remake) to Scream and all manner in between. Valentine is a great addition to the genre and, as noted in other reviews, not least because of the strong cast involved. The action is slick and pacy and the soundtrack fits with the mood of the events.

Also, as noted by others, my sleeve notes rather give the game away but not reading them saved that issue even on a rewatch!!!

Some innovative killings and a fair number of red herrings give the plot a good few twists and even the twist by the killer at the end is neatly executed.

If you like a slasher movie without too much gore but some good performances then give this a go as it might be just what you need, especially on the day that Cupid's arrows are supposed to strike!

'Valentine' (2001) is one of those films I always seem to revisit at least two times a year. Perhaps it's because I first watched it as a young teenager, which is certainly the movie's primary target audience, and it made an impression on me. It was my first taste of a slasher, and whilst it isn't ever going to make it on a list of greatest films from that genre - I still enjoy it a lot.

Valentines Day is typically the most romantic day of the year for many people, but not for a group of four school friends who are now young grown up women. As one by one they receive threatening cards from, they suspect, an outcast boy from school that they taunted. One by one the women are slain by a cupid mask wearing killer, expect from two. One of them is the girl who actually accepted a dance from him at school, only to be embarrassed when a gang of bullies discovered them together, She told them that the lad was assaulting her, and the innocent boy was sent to a reform school, never to be seen again. Is he now seeking revenge?

'Valentine' is an entertaining little film, but with hindsight, perhaps the identity of the killer was a bit obvious. Nevertheless, it's great fun from beginning to end, and the ending at least WILL come as a surprise.
