4.0 out of 5 stars Mixed bag, 20 Dec 2004
On this pair of cd's we have -
- THE BEST first movement that I have ever heard!!!
- EXCELLENT second
- THE WORST third movement that I have ever heard!!!!
- VERY GOOD fourth
- Kindertotenlieder that is ruined by positioning Janet Baker too much in front (couldn't listen to it second time)
- Audience on their worst behavior - coughing, crackling, moving, applauding between movements...
-Sound engineer (sound - overall is very, very good stereo) left annoyingly loud applause in the end which comes too quick after soft and silent ending of the symphony - this made me running for the volume every time, and I recommend fast removal of the headphones if you are using them

-Wanted to give three stars first, but that Andante comodo is so good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laboured & Profound Account!, 10 Nov 2008
By Scriabinmahler (Cambridge UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)

I totally disagree with the reviewer above. This is not smooth and easy listening Mahler of our era, but it belongs to the golden age of Mahler recordings in which the likes of Stokowski, Solti, Levine, Tennstedt made gritty and labouring Mahler recordings, and Horenstein's robust and profound account of 9th belongs to that era. Highly recommendable alongside another monumental heavy-weight recording of the same symphony conducted by Maderna, also avilable on BBC Legend.
