Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The ID is a multi-coloured, chocolate coated, wide flared, jumping pumping epic. Once a surprise hit, Macy Gray is now near the top of the soul tree (where she remains a strange fruit among a bunch of soundalikes). Her debut album On How Life Is came from seemingly nowhere to be loved by millions. This follow-up has to contend with much greater expectations. But she doesn't disappoint. The opening track "Related to a Psychopath" is perhaps the album's best, a mixture of 60s and 70s funk that'll have you grinding in the streets. If that doesn't, then "Sexual Revolution" will ("So many things to do before I die"), a saucy butt-shaking hymn to acting out your fetishes. Slick Rick's sing-song vocal on "Hey Young World II" is a perfect compliment to Macy's trademark mixture of gasp and squeak, but other guests, such as Erykah Badu and Mos Def, seem overwhelmed by Macy's larger-than-life presence. Lyrically she's strong, at times hilarious ("You're role model's in therapy") and much improved from the (relative) simplicity of debut tracks such as "I Try" and "Why Didn't You Call Me". Tracks such as "Boo" and "Freak Like Me" couple clever wordplay (she trained as a screenwriter) with the same anthemic quality. On occasions she loses the plot, particularly on "Oblivion" which sounds like it's written and performed by Oompa-Loompas, but this is, on the whole, an excellent follow-up to a brilliant debut.--Jake Barnes

5.0 out of 5 stars Expecting another "On How Life Is"?, 15 Aug 2001
This isnt it. It's much funkier, the heady mix of seventies jazz disco style and Macy's increasingly manic voice makes for a damn good CD however. The opening track "Related to a Psychopath" (One wonders if a member of Macy's family penned the lyrics) is excellent, earthy beats, and a simple catchiness, that will make it popular, I've no doubt. The second track, "Boo", is softer, simpler, more like Macy at her best. "Sexual Revolution" cons you, with its violin opening, and the typical Macy straining balladesque tones for the first 79 seconds, then it bursts into a studio 54 style, disco fever number, complete with bells and whistles. There are many tracks on this album, featuring other artists, and for me, the crowning glory of the whole cd is "Sweet Baby" featuring Eryka Badu..beautiful, this is the "I Try" of this album.

"Oblivion" is bizarre, who knows what the hell this is doing on the cd - it's like some bizarre West End Musical production... On the whole, pretty good. Enjoy....

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Trendsetter, I Hope, 17 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Macy's back, boy is she back! What an album, this rates highly as one of the best albums this century (cheesy lines aside, this is a fact). The opening track will have you jumping up and down in a style you didn't know you had in you. 'Freak' has you thinking it's a dodgy cover of something Robbie Williams has done, until you listen to it a second or third time, then you realise that it's just as good as anything else on the album. In short I would say that this album should stay in the charts for months, if not years! It has tracks for everyone, the disco boogie in you will enjoy, 'Sexual Revolution' for those who enjoy soul, you'll find it in 'Don't Come Around'. Basically if you're concerned that second albums tend to struggle this will return the invest of buying it, in terms of hours whiled away listening, and enjoying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantabulous, 21 Nov 2001

this has to be the album of the yaer. since buying a month now i still havent been able to put it down. tracks like 'gimme all your lovin' just make you wonder. then the upbeat tracks like 'shed, sexual revolution and relating to a psychopath' just.... amazing. this album does not suffer the age old problem of all the good song at the front and the bad at the back though the track 'oblivion' makes you wonder exactly what she was thinking whilst recording it. ending with the upbeat track 'shed' leaads you back to the first track. there is no way you are going to be able to put it down. all in all a great album and worth listening to. buy it!!!!!
