These Demons are not Real!, 2 Oct 2001
By A Customer
The sub-title is the "Screaming Demons over Europe", and the aim of the whole product is to get you to join an on-line squadron, of which there are a few who are pretty obsessive. Off-line you get to take on 30 missions, in a choice of 10 planes from British; American or German air forces. The whole show is of course World war 2 in Europe. The program needs a reasonably fast computer for what it is, as there is very little in the way of realistic scenery, and that goes for the cockpit art which is also square and blocky, and a poor effort compared to other simulations of this type. That is a shame as the aircraft you get to fly are not the run-of-the-mill selection. Of course everyone's favourite the Spitfire and Mustang are there, and the not un common P-38 and FW190 too, but you can fly bombers too, like the B-17 and Lancaster and Ju-88. Otherwise you can take on a jet (me 262) or the first designated fighter-bomber of the RAF, the Typhoon. All this betrays the title as many of the planes are not fighters at all! However, you can fly escorts to the bo'mbers, and then even change your plane half way through the action. This is where the high memory is needed, in that all the other planes can be controlled by an artificial intelligence which is not too bad at all. As for anything other than dogfighting, well there really is not much more, as the other tasks, (landing, take off etc.) are pre'tty simple, and the whole package seems to be geared towards extremely fast dogfighting action (hence the loss of cockpit realism and slightly strange perspectives). Overall it does not impress an aircraft enthusiast like myself, though the outside view of the planes is well detailed and the flight dynamics are good. If you want a good old dogfight (with some well put together video titles to get you in the mood) then it's not too bad.
