A waste of money, 18 Jul 2004
After having just spent £200 on the A80, I thought that I would get the proper case from Canon, to protect my new equipment.I hoped that this product would serve three functions: 1. Provide some padding to protect from impact. 2. Prevent dust and dirt from contaminating the camera. 3. Provide protection from the elements. Sadly, this case does none of the above. What padding that is present, is thin and would provide little or no protection against a drop or heavy knock. The case is held closed by a flap secured with velcro, around the edges of the flap there are large spaces where dirt, water or dust could easily enter and contaminate the camera. The case is not waterproof and a quick look at the materials used in construction reveals that, among other things, 10% of the item is made from.... CARDBOARD!? One of the main reasons I purchased this case instead of a 3rd party was that I wanted a nice soft lining that would not scratch the camera, or wear away at the surfaces and cause cosmetic damage. At least, this case does have that.. but to add insult to injury, I quickly noticed that the fibres of the soft lining were being shed and contaminating my camera. Maybe only a small number, but I get the feeling that I was better off keeping my A80 in the bubble-wrap bag in which it came.. it was perfectly clean until I used the PS600 Softcase. The only good purpose I can think of for this bag is as a presentation aid if you ever wish to sell your A series camera, since it does _look_ quite nice. I will probably now have to purchase a 3rd party case, in effect paying twice. I expected much better for £15, especially from Canon. My advice: avoid and buy a 3rd party case with a nice tight seal and weatherproof materials.
