5.0 out of 5 stars Great combination of romanticism and classicism, 5 Jun 2005
By J. W. van Aalst - See all my reviews

The combination of violin virtuoso David Oistrakh with conductor Otto Klemperer, a legend by itself, is almost always a guarantee for a legendary recording. The disc, originally recorded in 1960, opens with Violin concerto in D, op.77 by Johannes Brahms; a highly romantic violin concerto which is in my opinion performed with just the right touch of expression. It is highly moving without becoming overly sentimental. The same applies to the Sonfonia concertante by Mozart, written exactly a century before Brahms published his violin concerto. The sound recording quality is excellent without being overly pumped-up. A deeply moving experience and highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Towering Brahms, 7 Nov 2007
By Walter Mirauer "WalterM" (Halifax UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
You shouldn't buy this recording for David Oistrakh's immaculate fiddling. Neither should you buy it for the ensemble playing of the ORTF (French National Radio Orchestra). Nor, even, should you buy it for the excellent re-mastered sound quality. You should buy this disc for Otto Klemperer's unique grasp of the structure of one of Brahms' masterpieces. It is a monumental performance, so much so that the virtuosity of the soloist becomes almost irrelevant against the revelation of Brahms' power, passion and structure that Klemperer brings to this work. The total effect is like being afforded a glimpse into a musician's very soul. If you're an Oistrakh fan, he recorded this work several times with George Szell et al. Milstein and Heifetz also made memorable contributions, but it is this one which brings home the bacon.
Consummately performed by the brothers Oistrakh, the Sinfonia Concertante by Mozart is a charming irrelevance - beautiful bistro background burble. Enjoy.

The post is very fast. However, there are some cracking on CD package, but it is just a small problem.
I am satisfied.
