Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Destroyer Command is a 3-D naval combat simulation which gives you command of a World War II-era destroyer in the US Navy in either the Atlantic or Pacific theatres. You can advance to command a division of destroyers and w ill participate in a variety of naval actions against Axis forces. You will stalk U-boats, swat Kamikaze planes, escort convoys, blast enemy ships in surface actions or pound the beaches in support of infantry landings.

Engage the enemy with a variety of powerful weapons ranging from torpedoes, 40 mm cannons, depth charges, or the main battery of 5-inch guns. You have the option to take direct control of highly detailed individual ship stations or play from a more traditional top-down perspective. A detailed 3-D world with exacting physics modelling, fully immerses you and rounds out the Destroyer Command experience.

Another feature of Destroyer Command is the ability to play against owners of the World War II German U-Boat title, Silent Hunter 2, via Internet or LAN. This is unique for computer gaming, allowing players of two different products to compete against each other on the same virtual battlefield. Destroyer Command also features cooperative and head-to-head multiplayer options with other Destroyer Command players.

3.0 out of 5 stars One day this will be a great game, 19 Mar 2002
By Peter Smith (Grantham, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is almost the best WW2 sim that I have ever seen, it is almost the best naval warfare sim ever, it is also full of bugs. When the bugs get fixed, it will be the best ever, but for the moment it is very frustrating. The simulation is excellent, the graphics are wonderful, a squadron of destroyers changing formation at high speed is a magnificent sight, and to see your ship blazing away at the enemy is awsome. The balance between playability and realism is about as good as it gets. While it runs it is great fun and exciting, but when the bugs bite, and your radar set disappears or the game will not reload, it becomes a big disappointment. There is a patch available, but, while it does fix some bugs, it creates new ones. It would appear that the game was rushed out too soon. I would recommend waiting to buy until the game is made more stable, when that day arrives it will be worth the full five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Destroyer Command - the shocking truth!, 29 Aug 2002
First off, ask yourself this question: Do I want to buy an (almost) authentic Naval combat Simulator? If the answer is yes, read on, if no, spend your money elsewhere.

This game has it all. You can command a destroyer, or a whole fleet. You can order your crew to fire on a Jap cruiser, or you can do it yourself (in manual too with wonderfully accurate range-finding apparatus). Your fleet can attack enemy bombers or you can get behind the sight of of twin Bofors and blast them to bits yourself. You can even manouevre and drop depth charge patterns on enemy subs. And for those of you who really want to get a feel for life on a WW2 warship, you can operate the radar and ASDIC sets yourself!

Okay, its not perfectly accurate. To aim, fire, reload the main guns would take a large, well-trained crew operateing in several different part of the ship to accomplish, you can do it from one. But every effort has been made to try and get as much authenticity as is possible with a computer game. The detail is incredible and the playability is as good as could be.

Complaints? A few. The graphics are not as amazing as I first expected (and I far exceed the requirements) as there is no bow wave or spray, and some of the 3D models aren't as good as they ought to be. The manual does contain an adequate destciption of how to use each station, but only practice can all ow you to master them, its training section isn't in tho. You have to print this.

So all-in-all its a very good game, but one for the likers of more authentic combat than the point and click variety. I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Dam Good, 16 Mar 2002
By A Customer
Ever since I played Silent Hunter2 I had been dieing to play this and i was not disapointed, the graphics are excellent and so is the story line. Even better than SH2!! The controls only take about 5 minutes to get the hang of if you have played SH2. All in all the game was worth the wait, and pretty good for value.
