Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Muddy Waters should need no introduction. Not only did he provide a name for the world's greatest rock & roll band, but he also created the Chicago electric blues sound that's dominated the genre since he first hit the windy city in the late 1940s. His bands also featured what would become a who's who of electric blues: Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers, Otis Spann, James Cotton, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, and the list goes on. The Anthology covers Waters's most important period: his first years at Chess through the late 1960s. All his best-known songs are featured in their definitive versions, providing the perfect introduction to a blues master who doesn't need one. --Mike Johnson

CD Description

Far and away the foremost figure in Chicago's post-war electric blues scene, Muddy Waters is a towering musical icon who left behind a vast recorded legacy. ANTHOLOGY (1947-1972) nevertheless manages to be a definitive career summary, packing 50 tracks onto two discs, spanning 25 years of recordings for Chess, the premier Chicago blues label. From the earliest tracks, we can literally hear the style's template beingcreated; while Waters had already abandoned his heavily Robert Johnson-influenced solo country-blues sound by the late '40s, a trace of that approach can still be heard in his first Chess sides.
By the time the '50s rolled around, Muddyhad fashioned a powerful engine that ran on high-voltage electricity, and, with the help of songsmith Willie Dixon, fashioned some of the most resonant and seminal blues recordings ever made. To hear Muddy's biting slide-guitar work and gravitas-filled voice is to understand just how deep into one's soul the blues can reach. Whether expressing the Tao-like sentiments of "You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had", coming on like a house afire ("I'm Ready"), or bemoaning the heaviest of heartaches ("Standin' Around Cryin'"), no one reached further into the heart of the blues than Muddy did during his long, productive Chess tenure, as is made gloriously evident on ANTHOLOGY.

5.0 out of 5 stars Muddy - The 'benchmark' vocal and instrumental bluesman, 24 Jan 2002
By A Customer
'The Anthology' truly captures the essence and amplifies the breadth of Muddy Waters' blues legacy. The excellent - but sensitive -reworking of what would now be viewed as primitive recordings makes this artist come alive again! It is hugely pleasing to identify phrasing and 'licks' that have appeared in the guitar works of his latterday devotees in the R&B genre. Sadly, few examples of his work are available widely and 'The Anthology' is the 'must have' record of Muddy's influential benchmark styles of vocal and instrumental virtuosity.

5.0 out of 5 stars The beginning, 2 Sep 2008

This is truly a must-have for anyone interested in Muddy or the blues and why it took off in the way that it did. These awesome recordings give a great insight into what blues are and even seem strangley familiar after the years of listening to Clapton and the Rolling Stones, themselves having been influenced so strongly by Muddy. This is where it all really took off, with Muddy's slide playing ringing out so clearly above his emotion filled, thoughtful lyrics. Must-have!

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb collection, 4 April 2009
By Docendo Discimus (Vita scholae) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
The handsomely packaged three-disc Chess Box remains the ultimate Muddy Waters-collection, but this reasonably priced double-disc anthology is not far behind.

It manages to collect almost all of Waters' best recordings for Chess Records, from his early acoustic sides with just bassist Ernest 'Big' Crawford for company, to his hard-rocking 50s and 60s cuts, including literally all the must-have classics:
"Mannish Boy", "Got My Mojo Working" and "Hoochie Coochie Man" are here of course, as well as "You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had", the supremely groovy "I Love The Life I Live", a thumping "I Just Want To Make Love To You", the swaggering "I Want To Be Loved", and numerous other top-notch blues classics like "Honey Bee", "Forty Days and Forty Nights", "I'm Ready" and "I Can't Be Satisfied".

This is not everything you could ever want from Muddy Waters...his latter-day Blue Sky recordings aren't here, and his live "Muddy Waters At Newport" is a must-have as well. But if you're looking for a really good overview of Waters' hugely influential and trail-blazing Chess years, you really can't go wrong with this sublime, well annotated collection of Waters' tough, swaggering blues.
All five stars and no reservations at all. Highly recommended.
