Amazon.co.uk Review

Gone With the Wind: the Essential Max Steiner presents two hours of newly recorded and well-performed suites and themes from 23 of the 300-plus films scored by the man who defined the sound of cinema. Steiner applied the principles of late-romantic classical music to Hollywood, establishing the idea of Wagnerian leitmotivs to identify characters, places and moods and promoting a strain of rich Viennese-style melody as the emotional heart of the movies. His music for King Kong (1933), universally acclaimed as the first great film score, defined the sound of the fantasy blockbuster to the present day. Likewise in penning a lavish three-hour score for Gone With the Wind (1939), Steiner cemented the approach composers took to the romantic epic for decades to come. Here is a 14-minute suite which skilfully distils the essence of this great score, while the remainder of this two-CD set is a role call of Hollywood classics, from Casablanca (1942) and The Treasure of Sierra Madre (1948) to Mildred Pierce (1945) and The Searchers (1956). The pop arrangement of A Summer Place (1959) comes from near the end of Steiner's career, ironically sounding more dated than his earliest music. Undoubtedly the most complete introduction to one of cinema's most important composers, The Essential Max Steiner is an excellent foundation to any film-music collection. --Gary S Dalkin
