Amazon.co.uk Review

The three young comedians known collectively as The League of Gentlemen develop their unique comic-grotesque creations still further in this second series. Helped by elaborate makeup, Mark Gattis, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith throw themselves into their many disguises with unbounded enthusiasm. What is even more impressive is that, together with co-writer Jeremy Dyson, the Gentlemen manage to locate these alarming characters within coherent story arcs that interlock over the course of a series as well as inside the individual six episodes. Here we have the apparently inexplicable plague of fatal nosebleeds that affects the remote Northern town of Royston Vasey, the attempts of the incestuous shopkeepers Edward and Tubbs to find a bride for their monstrous offspring, the misadventures of some lost plastics salesmen, and the hostage crisis at the local Restart centre. Achingly funny and entirely disturbing, this is comedy less dependent on brilliant one-liners than on recognisable yet distorted situations. One-off creations like Papa Lazarou's sinister circus or the patronising theatre group Legz Akimbo are as fine as the sustained characterisation of the anal toad-obsessed Denton family. --Roz Kaveney

On the DVD: the first disc contains Season 2's six episodes complete with commentary from the four Gentlemen themselves. It's equally as fun and fascinating as their commentary for the first season and reveals many of the hidden movie references and in-jokes that would otherwise be missed. The second disc has a 30-minute behind-the-scenes documentary made for the BBC, plus a series of outtakes and alternative versions of certain scenes. Also included is Creme Brulee's "Vodoo Lady" in its glorious entirety, a singalong version of the Dentons' house-cleaning song and excerpts from Joby Talbot's comic-Gothic score. There are text features on the "Local People", a scrapbook of location photographs, and Royston Vasey's Territorial Army recruiting poster. Spreading it all across two discs seems a little on the stingy side, however. --Mark Walker

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb second instalment of the brilliant comedy series, 21 Oct 2001
The inhabitants of Royston Vasey are back - and this time it's more weird and surreal than the first series. After the first series' plot line of a new road being built through the town (which has evidently not happened!) this time the town is held in the grip of a strange epidemic of nose bleeds. As you'd expect from the League Of Gentlemen lads, there are new characters in this series including the scarily funny Papa Lazarou, the mayor (superbly played by Roy Chubby Brown) and two old ladies who run the charity shop, obsessed by 'special marks' and bags. The series' really hots up in the last episode (i can't reveal what happens, because it would spoil it). If you're new to this show, it might not be your cup of tea, but even so, you'd be a fool to give it a miss - comedy like this unfortunately comes along too rarely. It's also a double DVD set, including fantastic extras like cast commentary, deleted scenes, photo gallery, character biographies, a behind the scenes documentary, and even a selection of music from the series. As it is, this will keep fans glued to their TV's for a long time to come - brilliant!

5.0 out of 5 stars The League of Gentlemen series 2, 19 Aug 2001
Continuing the stories of the local people from Royston Vasey, the second series of The League of Gentlemen is as bizarre, horrifying and hilarious as the first. The majority of the original characters return to this series, which features the on-going stories of The Dentons, Hilary Briss and Edward & Tubbs etc... There are also some new equally strange and twisted characters including Herr Lipp (my personal favourite), Papa Lazarou, and the Mayor of Royston Vasey played by Chubby Brown.

The League of Gentlemen is probably the funniest, grotesque and distorted comedy series I've seen since The Comic Strip presents... back in the early eighties. It's definitely far superior to the majority of other shows around today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Includes More "Special Stuff", 29 Oct 2001
Apart from all the episodes from Season 2(which would have made a more than worthy purchase on their own) it is the "Special Stuff" that truly makes this double disc a must have for all fans and converts alike.Cast commentry, or "local gossip" is a great insight into each scene, but for me the shining light is disc 2's "Behind the Scenes" documentry - I *suspect* this may have been shown on BBC digital before, but being a simple terrestrial viewer I cannot confirm this. Was nice to finally see Jeremy Dyson. The profiles of the "local people" i was a tad disappointed to not find some of my favourite characters - Stella & Charlie (their constant bickering never fails to crack me up), Pauline the re-start officer, Benjamin & the Dentons, Herr Lipp...or perhaps I'm not looking closely enough? But the photo gallery and music clips are great additions too.
In a nutshell, you could do a lot worse...
