5.0 out of 5 stars A truly indispensable CD., 27 Nov 2003
By Sigmund Melberg (Stavanger, Norway) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The master of French chansons in the singer-songwriter-poet tradition of the 1950s is represented on this CD with some of his finest work. All music is written by Léo Ferré himself, also the words (or "poems") of 12 out of 18 songs. Some of them are true classics (Le piano du pauvre, Paris canaille, Le Pont Mirabeau), which, in the course of the years, have been translated to many European languages and performed by dozens of fine artists - but here are the ORIGINALS, impeccably remastered, allowing you to enjoy in full the French poetry and forceful expression of the master. Even if you don't speak a word of French, you will be able to enjoy the stunning performance by a great artist who clearly has something to say - and says it in words AND music. The title of the CD tells the truth: If you are going to buy only ONE Léo Ferré CD, this one is truly "indispensable"!

2.0 out of 5 stars Emperor's New Clothes, 14 April 2009
By Peter Scott-presland "homopromos" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There is a horrible take-it-or-leave-it attitude in so much French culture, which is fostered by the DVDs which don't provide subtitles (so many good french movies, the entire back catalogue of Fernandel and Marcel Pagnol) and CDs which don't include lyrics and translations, or even a link to a website which will provide them

French people adore Ferre, with the kind of respect that working class people who value self-improvement give to culture in general. Go to a flea-market, and Ferre LPs will be at a premium. But songs are about communication and respect has to be earned. It has to be said that his songs almost never carry a decent tune, and his slight, plaintive voice loses its charms quickly. Imagine if you were listening to Leonard Cohen and you didn't speak English. How great would you think he is? Ferre's voice isn't nearly as interesting as Cohen's.

I speak good French, and I love Ferre's dense, allusive lyrics. Some of them are poetry, the real McCoy. But that doesn't help you to enjoy them if all you hear is a voice and a grinding musical line.

This is a kind of wake-up call to the French. The reason American culture is taking over your country is because US corporations know how to market. The reason everyone knows and loves Louis Armstrong is because so many recordings are out of copyright and freely available. Down with protectionism! Make it cheap, make it accessible, and there are many people who will learn to love the riches which French culture has to offer - even the obscure riches of Leo Ferre
