Amazon.co.uk Review

If you read the label on a box of chocolates you'll know exactly what you're gonna get. Life isn't like that in Forrest Gump, however, which is one of the reasons why this movie divided appreciative audiences from hard-hearted critics like few others before it. Audiences responded to the Frank Capra-style sentimentality of this warm-hearted tale of a good ol' American boy making his way in the world without ever losing his pure and simple innocence. Critics, however, were made uneasy by the apparently reactionary subtext to the parallel lives of Forrest and his girlfriend Jenny. Her fate, contrasted with his, suggests a triumph for plain ol' American values over dangerous freethinking hippies and liberals. Whether the movie is just unadulterated sentiment or right-wing propaganda, one thing at least was acknowledged by all: that Forrest Gump displays all the craftsmanship of one of Hollywood's most inventive directors and features a central performance from an actor renowned for his total commitment to every role. Thanks to Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks, even the most cynical critic will find it hard not to shed at least one tear by the end of this undeniably engrossing movie. The soundtrack is great, too.

On the DVD: another good two-disc set gives fans of Gump and budding filmmakers alike plenty to enjoy. The anamorphic picture and Dolby Surround on Disc 1 do full justice to Zemeckis' vision, which is accompanied by two commentaries: one from the director, producer Steve Starkey and production designer Rick Carter, and another one from producer Wendy Finerman. Disc 2 has the usual making of documentary (30 mins), plus some neat featurettes on the production and sound design and the many special effects shots (including how they made Gary Sinise lose his legs). In addition there are some screen tests of Robin Wright and a very young Haley Joel (The Sixth Sense) Osment, plus trailers and a photo gallery. All in all this is a worthwhile package. --Mark Walker

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing, 21 May 2006
By CC (England) - See all my reviews
This movie is nothing short of amazing.
I watched it when it first came out and i was twelve years old and it made me think about life in a whole different light.
Tom Hanks turned in an award winning performance and the story of Forest Gump's life touched right to the heart.
The things he saw, through the eyes of the most innocent and genuine man that could ever exist, and the things he experienced were truly amazing and captivating.
I forgot about time whilst caught up in this film and felt all warm and fuzzy when if finished.
Pease buy this film and treasue it, it is one of the best movies ever made and stories ever told. It may be some time, if ever, we the public, are treated to such a deserving movie worth our time and money. unlike most movies these days that are void of any story and interest, Forest Gump is bursting at the seems with humour, sadness (a simple fact of life) and 100% talent.
Buy it, keep it, and watch it over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars "and do you know i could run like the wind", 17 Feb 2007
This superb film is the definition of irony, this film has it all through. Forrest Gump a man with learning difficulties, who is gentle, kind and loyal. Traits that are not universally found in people. He first came across the other all to common adverse side of the human character cruelty; when alighting on the school bus for the first time - this seats taken - its taken - this seats taken. Until after walking the gauntlet, while wearing callipers strapped on his legs, a little voice said "you can sit here if you want". She was to become his childhood friend Jenny.
Fate bestowed on him another gift, after being taunted and pelted with stones, Jenny shouted "run Forrest run". [Forrest] "And do you know - I could run like the wind", (callipers flying off ). His running took him through college, they had to stop him running out of the end zone and straight out of the stadium.
Then Into Vietnam he meets Buba who becomes his good friend, and the compassionate street wise and dry Lieutenant Dan. Their unit gets ambushed, Forrest's automatic supreme act of heroism and selflessness, he extracts his fellow comrades. Forrest was awarded America's highest medal for valour and courage. The Medal of Honour - could not have gone to a more deserving man. It was well suited in Forrest. He later meets up with Lieutenant Dan, whose life is transformed from cynical depressive, to reconciliation with life, and life was worth living through his friendship in Forrest. Smile when you see the situations he gets himself into. Feel empathy and sorrow when he's cruelly treated. If you have a heart of granite this film will not effect you. If you have a trace of humility - it will get you where it really counts, right in the heart. The music all through the movie was a outstanding and also made and set the film.

Stella acting and great scene performances from Gary Sinese - Lt Dan Taylor, Mykelti Williamson - Bubba and Tom Hanks

Brilliant very moving film
