Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 has come on leaps and bounds since the last edition. With improved graphics, greater realism and plenty of options you will be hard pushed to find a better flight simulator.

They always say that God is in the detail, and the Flight simulator team have proved it here. The main difference you will notice straight away is in the landscape detail, taking on ideas that they have learnt through previous versions and their work on Microsoft Train Simulator (it's the same team), they have produced scenery that is very impressive. The sea shimmers in the sunlight, while waves crash against the sea shore. Improved detail also means that certain cities like Las Vegas have character to them--you can see the lights and fireworks at night--while some airports now have the ability for you to dock at specific gates.

It's not just the scenery though that has been improved and Microsoft Flight Simulator has now got a fully interactive Air Traffic Control system allowing you to request everything from landing procedures to traffic information. The need for a runway is no guarantee however, as the game has also introduced an amphibian plane to content with, allowing you to land on any lake, sea or river.

With so many features including downloadable live weather, multiplayer functions and even an analysis option to record your flights, this is one hefty product that will quench the thirst of any flight sim fan.

While the standard edition will give you virtually all you need for a flight sim game, the professional version is dedicated to those you know what they want. With additional planes, an editor to design your own planes and the impressive instructor feature over the Web--it allows you when practising with others over the Web to force errors--this edition is well worth the addition £20, and what's more at the moment Microsoft is offering £15 cash back.--Jason Denwood

As a Private Pilot this title is as close as it gets to the real thing currently. The attention to detail is phenominal especially with the added interactive ATC and virtual cockpit. If anything it is harder to fly here than the real thing, but it really can be used to practice, especially for Instrument ratings. I doubt very much I would be sad enough to be running through check lists etc. before taking off, but is there if you so desire. Scenery and airports are also much improved in this version. Was always a little wary paying 65 notes for a game, but having spent the best part of a week being unable to drag myself away from my PC it's well worth it. The best PC Flight Sim Available

Flight Simulator 2000 was a disappointment to say the least. Even the most powerful systems slowed to a crawl, and that wasn't even with the graphical effects turned up. Freezing, hanging, and a host of nightmare issues to sort out before you even got in the air all added up to a terrible edition of this 20yr old simulator. In 2002, all this has changed. Beautiful graphics, flight modelling, amazingly realistic Air Traffic Control, Artificial Intelligence which controls other aircraft in the sky, and NONE of this has hardly any effect on the frame rates. Me personally, I run a Celeron 566MHz machine, with 192Mb RAM and a 16Mb graphics card. I get in the region of 15-20 frames/sec on the ground, and upwards of 40 frames/sec in the air, even with a lot of the effects turned on. Can't recommend this title enough, it's fantastic, but don't forget.. it isn't a game, it's a simulator, and there are no guns or killing! Just fly!

After the disappointment of Flight Simulator 2000, Microsoft has revamped almost every area of the sim and released a much better product, a product which will become the standard that others will be compared against. The entire world is modelled in stunning detail, and the new autogen feature (which adds pseudo-random scenery - buildings & trees) cranked up to maximum really makes the difference. Cities become sprawling landscapes, forests are really full of trees for a change. The aircraft included are all superb, and it won't be long before more are available on-line. The one thing that stopped me giving this 5 stars is the actual physical product, I bought the professional version which costs a lot of money, to find only a small cardboard box, 3 leaflets and 3 CDs in a cardboard sleeve is I think disgraceful. Past versions of this product (ie before MS bought it) supplied you with an excellent manual and navigation charts. Manuals are available on the CD but the style is more rhetoric and somehow rather less informative.

Still, the programming team responsible have produced an excellent product and as ever the bigger company have let us down.

However I note that Amazon supply a free book to counter this, so if you want simply the best civilian flight simulator, Flight Simulator 2002 is it.
