This is a wonderful CD. Berio’s Voci is a lyrical, atmospheric and moving viola concerto- a rumination on the Sicilian folk music that Berio calls the richest in the Mediterranean. The viola ‘sings’ the songs and the orchestra comments in Berio’s language. Naturale turns the idea on its head by putting recordings of the original folk songs alongside a commentary from the solo viola. As a bonus there are some more extraordinary examples of Sicilian folksongs. A thrilling and thought-provoking programme in excellent performances by Kim Kashkashian.
