Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Whereas Crash Bandicoot is often described as the PlayStation's answer to Sonic the Hedgehog, the nearest Sony's machine ever got to a 3-D Super Mario-style adventure was the Spyro the Dragon titles. They may have been a little simplistic but they were better efforts than most and this new isometric offering on the GBA is also surprisingly fun.

Spyro has the same basic range of moves as on the PlayStation as you jump and float around the game world breathing fire at all and sundry. Although the basic gameplay simply involves you collecting hundreds of fairies and other items, much effort is made to ensure things don't get too monotonous, mostly through a long series of sub-quests and mini-games. The mini-games are particularly good as they often use a side-on or first person perspective, which makes for a nice change of pace.

The only problem with the game is the rather empty feeling to it all--the levels are enormous and it's easy to get lost--but this is a problem that could easily be levelled at the original PlayStation games so it seems unfair to criticise too harshly. It's hardly revolutionary but a pleasing amount of effort has gone into this and it's certain to please fans of the series. --David Jenkins

Manufacturer's Description
In Spyro: Season of Ice, Spyro, trying to relax during a much deserved, uninterrupted vacation in Dragon Shores, receives a message that a careless Rhynoc wizard has captured Zoe and frozen all the fairies throughout the Fairy Realms. Using her last bit of magic, Zoe sends a magic balloon to Spyro for help. Determined to save his friends from the wicked wizard, Spyro teams up with his friends Hunter and Sparx to save Zoe and free as many of the frozen fairies before time runs out. Together, Spyro and his friends confront all new bosses and lands never before seen with dragon eyes.

Players will experience the traditional 3D Spyro worlds and enjoy Spyro's classic effects and abilities while exploring 30 new and enchanted levels, including Lava Prairie, Hummingbird Village, Honey Marsh, Roman Holiday, Star Park and Age Speedway.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK but poor controls, 30 Jul 2003
By A Customer
I bought this version of Spyro after having already completed (almost!) the previous Spyro games (apart from Enter the Dragonfly, which was dreadful!) All in all I though the game was really good, but sometimes I found it was really difficult to control the dragon, especially when jumping.

Worth the money, but you would be better off getting season of flame instead as it's easier to control and the game just looks much better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spyros Back!, 24 Jan 2002
I immediatly picked up Spyro when it came out. Id played the PS versions before it, and that was enough reason to buy it. I still remember my first thought about the game - 'Damn this is an annoying perspective!'. And its true. The sorta-3d perspective is really annoying at first, but you get used to it after about 10 minutes.
Anyways, the graphics on this game are beautiful. The semi-3d perspective has allowed for the game producers to add in some beautiful backgrounds, and the sprites are well animated and suit their places. Spyro looks perfect, everything about him has been replicated from the PS versions. His flame breath looks great, and when he charges there is absoloutly no slow down at all. The controls on the game seem tricky at first, and the perspective doesnt help, but theyre pretty easy to pick up and they offer good control over Spyro. The music on the game is very good as well, being a mixture of new tracks, along with remixed PS tracks.
The gameplay is sometimes a bit linear, with the main objective being 'collect a lotta things to get a fairy', but its generally quite fun, and there is also some mini games in there to keep the interest flowing. The replay value is huge, as the game isnt fully complete untill you collect every gem, and every fairy, and even once you have completed it, there is another mini game unlocked for your amusement.
I can only find a few faults with this game:
1) the perspective makes it really hard to land Spyro after a jump, as the only sort of idea you get on where your going to land is your shadow, which can be really frustrating at times.
2) The flying levels are really mundane. I was hoping for a 3d flying experience, ala Spyro 1, but all i got was a forward space-shooter type level.
Overall, a trully great game, up there with the likes of Mario and Sonic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spyro:Seasons of ice, 18 Nov 2001
By Andrew Saunders (Hampshire,England) - See all my reviews
When I purchased this I had only played the original Spyro on the PSX. This was enough knowledge on it's own to purchase the latest update. This uses the GBA to all it's potential with luscious visuals, great gameplay and some very nice fairies!!! This is a very good alternative to Mario. It has great replay value too trying to collect ALL the crystals and fairies on every level of which there are 20. Overall it's one of the best games on the GBA to date - a recommended purchase.
