Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Now here's a first for new-gen console racing games: Lotus Challenge for the PlayStation 2 actually lets you damage the cars. Astonishing. It's all standard racing fare here and for the most part there's nothing out of the ordinary that would make you sit up and point screenwards in astonishment--until you smash your Elise into a solid object, at which point panels fly off convincingly and bodywork crumples satisfyingly during your attempts to keep your vehicle of choice under control. Real racing at last--hurrah!

Officially licensed by the British racing and sports car specialists, this game covers many years of Lotus' history, allowing the player to take the wheel of cars ranging from the 40s and 50s right up to the late 90s. Control is good, if a little spongy at times; it's difficult to say if this is true to the real cars, but for a video game it feels a little woolly after the crisp, responsive handling of Gran Turismo 3. Other than that Lotus Challenge is a competent little racer with a lot going for it. Graphics are up to the PS2's increasingly high standards and while some of the circuits lack a little in the imagination stakes, this is a title that sports-car fans are going to want to dabble with. --Chris Russell

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent racing game - much under rated, 12 Sep 2002
I bought Lotus Challenge hoping for a decent racing game for under a tenner, and I was pleasantly surprised. The graphics are excellent and would put many other recent full price racing games to shame. Plenty of cars including the GT sports cars, flashy road cars and even 1960's style Formula 1 cars. The tracks and graphics are smooth and superbly done and replays are cool (Grand Turismo style) Why this game was not a big hit beats me. It rocks and is great value for money. If you have played GT to death and want something new then this is your game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a decent driving game with Damage!!, 25 Aug 2001
Yes, that's right, Lotus Challenge is the first decent ps2 game with major damage! This game shows what GT3 should have included, and in my view has easily comparable graphics. I would reccommend this to any Lotus fan's such as myself and race fans in general.

Also u havn't played a race game till you have played Lotus Challenge stunt mode! Play the demo then buy this game, i don't think you will be dissapointed....

4.0 out of 5 stars Seriously impressive...GT3's underdog..., 12 April 2002
First things first. This is not a Gran Turismo beater. However, it is a highly competent, interesting, and above-all fun racer that..., is hard to beat - assuming you've already got GT3, of course...
Provided you like Lotuses (and who doesn't?), this is an interesting amalgamation of GT3 and Ridge 5. It has elements of Gran Turismo in its' impressive graphics, use of real cars and twitchy, realistic handling. But it also nods to the infamous Ridge games in its' general track design, fun element and "pick up and play" driving style. And it has its' own original features too - the ability to damage real cars is a genuine plus, and little touches such as a speedometer in MPH (at last!), a toggle to turn the cars' lights on and off, a visual gearlever gate and well thought-out controls show that this is a game that has benefited from some serious thought. Oh, and you get to drive a Lotus Carlton, which is worth ... on its own.
True, in absolute terms the steering, throttle and brake actions are a little bit mushy - especially compared with Gran Turismo - and the voice-over guy on career mode is seriously annoying; but these don't detract from it too much.
At the end of the day, this game does have its' faults... But if you're bored with Gran Turismo, have ... to spend on a racer and you're not desperate enough to buy "Driving Emotion Type S", look no further.
