The early 1990s in Manchester have become the Vietnam of dance culture. Thirtysomethings with a haunted look in their eyes still go on about "Madchester", "The Hacienda", "Joe Bloggs", "Spike Island" and the like. Ten years on and Shaun and Bez are reduced to dancing puppets in an advert for Unbelievable, a lasting testament to the crazy days, and a load of tracks made by dodgy scallies. There are some truly great tracks on this compilation--The Happy Monday's melon-twisting "Step On", the Stone Roses' era-defining "I Am the Resurrection", the Charlatans' incredible debut "The Only One I Know", the Soup Dragons' only moment of glory "I'm Free" and Inspiral Carpets' sing-a-long anthem "This Is How It Feels". There are also some truly awful moments: whoever thought of including Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence" and Pete Wylie's "Sinful" clearly wasn't there; as for the inclusion of the Smiths and Morrissey--too early and too late. We've all grown up now, our Joe Bloggs clobber firmly put away along with our flares, All that remains is a hazy mishmash of memories and the music itself. This was when music finally sorted itself out after the dismal early to mid 80's, and a scene led by the Stone Roses & the Happy Monday's set the trend & paved the way for Britpop & most present day indie/guitar bands. This albums a pretty good slice of what it was like back then with some absolute classics(Mock Turtles, House of Love,The La's,Soup Dragons)but it all kicked off from Manchester & the Roses, Mondays, Charlatans & Carpets are well represented here. There's a couple of odd ones as well, how the Shamen's 'LSI' got on here is anyones guess and the Smith's 'How Soon is now?' was released in '84.

On the whole a good album, it would have been fantastic with the Monday's 'hallelujah', James' 'Come Home' The Roses '...Drums'& the Primals 'Loaded'. Still,Like most of the songs on this album, I've got them lying around somewhere. If you wanna know where Oasis came from & many bands besides, here's a good place to start. Now if I could just remember where I put that Joe Bloggs gear....

Being at uni from 89-92 this is a pretty definitive collection for me. There are some outstanding tracks from acts who never hit these heights again - Farm, Roses, Mock Turtles, EMF - that I will never tire of hearing.

My favourite track overall has to be "Shine On" by the House of Love - recalls the days of packed sweaty clubs, baggy faded jeans, long sleeved t-shirts and cans of Redstripe!

Some "oddballs" too - Smiths, Pete Wylie and Depeche Mode which don't really stack up with the rest of the CD but are worth a listen.

If you were there you'll love it.

This CD is the best that I have purchased in years. The memories came flooding back to me of the late 80's and early 90's with artists such as The Stone Roses, Blur and Happy Mondays. This CD is worth every penny, purely for the memories, let alone the great music. This album is truely brilliant, BUY IT!!!
