Amazon.co.uk Review
Autumn in New York is a by-the-numbers love story, right down to its opening shot of, yes, autumn in New York. Richard Gere stars as restaurateur/lady's man Will, while Winona Ryder plays the airy-fairy, oh-too-delicate-for-this-world Charlotte. Will is 48, Charlotte is 22, and it just keeps getting creepier: Will actually used to hang out with Charlotte's mom. She plays artily with beads and sparkly things, he notices how elfin and different she is (inspiring such stomach-churning dialogue as "I find you completely unprecedented and therefore utterly unpredictable"), and soon they're in love. Ah, but it's doomed: she has a tumor in her heart (just in case you missed the significance, Charlotte says "I'm sick in my heart"). Does Charlotte have enough time left to teach Will to truly love? While Gere does a stoic job, Ryder spends a lot of time being darling and winsome, aided by the fact that Charlotte has managed to catch one of those special movie diseases where you never look bad or get tubes stuck up your nose. Director Joan Chen doesn't have much of a script to work with, but at least she knows how to pick a cinematographer; the whole movie is shot in gorgeous autumnal colours. Several excellent supporting actors are trapped in this movie: Jill Hennessey and Anthony LaPaglia do their very best, but what can they do in the face of such a sweeping, creepy love? Autumn in New York is nothing if not an earnest movie, and it certainly means well. Much like Charlotte, it seems to cry, "Can you let me love you? Please?". The answer is an emphatic "No". --Ali Davis, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Good movie about love and what it does to us..., 8 Nov 2003
By A. Agger (Denmark) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
When this movie first came out, I didn't rush to see it. That was a big mistake. I saw it not long ago and liked it very much. It is the story of Will Keane (Gere) and Charlotte Fielding (Ryder). Two very different persons not only in age but also in mind. He is a womanizer, a restauranteur, a playboy and in his 40s. She is dying, a free spirit yearning to taste the excitement of adult life, a hat-maker and in her 20s.

When Charlotte's birthday party is held at Will's restaurant, they meet. He knows her grandmother (he had an affair with Charlotte's mother). Will and Charlotte have a date which ends with sex, but the next day Charlotte tells Will that she is dying.
Thier relationship continues, but he cheats on her with his old girlfriend. Then they break up. Will realises that she is his match, and wins her back. Will goes to his long-lost daughter for help to find a doctor who dares to do the surgery on Charlotte's "impossible" case.
Will and Charlotte have a few good weeks together untill the surgery. The surgery fails and Charlotte dies. In the end Will and his daughter is brought together, as are many of the other characters .

It is a good story and the actors are very well together. I disagree with those, who say Ryder and Gere have no "chemistry." I found their relationship as believable as most on-screen relationships. The moral is that love is worth everything, even if you know that it possibly will not last. Will learnes to care about someone else and that brings him closer to his daughter.

I would recomend it to everyone who likes lovestories that dosen't always have a happy ending, or to people who just want to see a good movie. I surpose I belong to the latter, since I love all movies with a happy ending.

3.0 out of 5 stars Modern Romantic Tragedy, 16 May 2007

Gere and Ryder do not give their best performance in this movie. Each has played better roles in the past. Despite this, however, this is definitely the most emotional movie either has done. Though the plot is predictable, it doesn't detract from the story at all. If nothing else, it adds a bit more dimension to the movie. I disagree with others that this is a "chick-flick". I believe anyone that believes in romance will enjoy it. While the movie is marketed towards all segments of the population, romantics will probably get the most out of it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Abysmal, 2 Oct 2007

This is the worst film I have seen in years! Winona Ryder is excrutiating, Gere looks like he wishes he was somewhere else, the script is dismal and predictable. What a waste of a rental. Avoid at all costs!
