Amazon.co.uk Review
Chirpily likeable rather than profound, The Broken Hearts Club covers a few months in the lives of a group of young gay men on the West Hollywood scene and their pursuit of love and happiness. They admire the long-term domestic bliss of Jack (John Mahoney) in whose restaurant some of them work, but have no real sense of how to get there, of how to grow out of shallow dating relationships and the perpetual chase of the next cute body. Patrick Ben Weber is average-looking in a world of beautiful men like Cole (Dean Cain) and has developed a nasty tongue to go with the insecurity; Howie (Matt McGrath) over-intellectualises his relationships and their breakup; Dennis (Timothy Olyphant) is not even sure he should be hanging out with these people when he should be working on his photography. A little too much of this charming film is devoted to winding these characters up and letting them bitch at each other in a variety of locations and emotional messes, and yet there is real wit here and some moments of fine perceptiveness about being young and in a hurry to find what you need. --Roz Kaveney

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming, 12 Dec 2007
By David Rush "Fasten your seatbelts, its going ... (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This film was incredibly sweet and charming and just plain fun to watch. It did have a few sad moments, but on the whole is a film that will cheer you up and put a smile on your face. It tells the story of a group of gay friends who have their own amateur baseball team and who are always hanging out at the oldest member of their group, Jack's restaurant. The film is filled with great performances from a number of then relatively unknown actors who have since become much more famous. Its interesting to watch the film now, knowing what some of them have gone on to do in their careers. The film will appeal primarily to gay audiences, but almost anyone will find it fun, touching and a truly honest film about friendships, relationships and the loss of the ones we love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern romantic comedy to warm the hearts of all gay men., 23 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This is a modern classic of the romance genre. Imagine your life on film and what it would be like, this is just that. It's not an issue based 'gay' flick but an honest attempt to portray what all gay men at some time experience -the trauma of relationships.

The acting is superb with a good mix of well known and new actors. Many will be overjoyed to see 'Superman' Dean Kane as the beautiful and pouting man chaser and John Mahoney (Martin Crane in Frasier) puts in a spectacular supporting performance which proves he is an actor of great talent.

Definately a must see for all!!

5.0 out of 5 stars UNMISSBLE. IT'LL MAKE YOU CRY AND LAUGH AND SMILE!, 18 Mar 2003
The idea of a gay 'Steel Magnolias' like film was somewhat off putting, because like nearly every film covering the topic of sexuality, the characters are typically betrayed as vain, bed-hoping camp queens, but this film is not only an awakening for those people out there, but it sends out a message about love and true friendship. The characters in the film, who all create a very real chemistry, are those we in real life would cherish to have in our lives even for just one moment. I thought that not only was the acting flawless and the script witty and heartfelt, but the actual feel of the film was honest and had a genuine heart - be it straight or gay. If you're looking for a film that demeans homosexuality and makes hetrosexuals out to be the greater sexuality, then this film isn't for you. Go rent the American version of 'Queer as Folk', but if you're looking for a film, where without sexuality, remains a truely touching film, that'll make you cry, laugh and smile, then this is the film for you. I'd have to say that this is one of the best films I've ever seen.
