Amazon.co.uk Review
On the face of it, All the Pretty Horses should have everything going for it as a movie, taken from the novel by Cormac McCarthy acclaimed as one of the finest pieces of American writing of the past 20 years. The intuitive, up-and-coming actor-director Billy Bob Thornton, with a deep love of McCarthy's novels, takes the helm directing two hot young stars (Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz) and backed by some seasoned veterans (Sam Shepherd, Bruce Dern, Rubén Blades et al) along with first-rate technical support.

The plot seems tailor-made for landmark-movie status too. A downbeat, resonant tale that would have intrigued Sam Peckinpah, it tells of two young cowboys from post-WWII Texas, who cross the Rio Grande in search of the rugged adventurous life modern America can no longer offer them. And south of the border they find just what they're looking for--but in harsher, darker and far more brutal guise than they ever dreamt of.

All the ingredients point towards the makings of a classic Western. Yet somehow they never quite jell. Powerfully photographed by Barry Markowitz, All the Pretty Horses looks unfailingly superb, and Ted Tally's screenplay draws on much of the novel's spare, trenchant dialogue. Thornton handles the action sequences with assurance, especially the marathon horse-breaking episode. But it all feels distanced, and never dark or bleak enough for McCarthy's savage vision. Maybe Damon is as yet too young and bland for his character's agonised trajectory. There were rumours of script problems, of scenes ruthlessly excised; Thornton claims that Miramax cut the film. Whatever the causes, the film is handsome to look at, absorbing to watch, but casts few shadows in the mind.

On the DVD: Filmographies for Thornton and half-a-dozen leading players; the theatrical trailer (plus trailers for two other Miramax releases, Finding Forrester and Almost Famous); subtitles and a menu. In something of a missed opportunity the DVD lacks a commentary from Billy Bob could have been illuminating. But at least the crisp print, full-width ratio (1:2.35) and the Dolby 5.1 sound do the film's technical achievements proud. --Philip Kemp

4.0 out of 5 stars Under rated, globally badmouthed western, 20 May 2004
By A Customer
A supremely ambitious effort by Billy Bob Thornton in attempting to film an astonishing book that endures mainly due to Cormac McCarthy's uniquely beautiful prose, All the Pretty Horses was shot down on release due mainly to appallingly bad word of mouth.

Initially slated to star DiCaprio, the film ended up with Matt Damon as John Grady Cole. Damon is excellent and when you consider the flexibility he has demonstrated in his acting (Talented Mr Ripley, Good Will Hunting, Bourne Identity, Stuck on You), the man deserves more praise than he receives. His performance in this film is excellent, and should prove recognisable to people who have read the book first.

Thornton's direction is, in my opinion, truly epic, full of meandering shots of the harsh landscape and giving a real sense of how life as a cowboy must have been at that particular, post WWII time of heightened uncertainty.

The two huge bonuses the film version of All the Pretty Horses present are however Lucas Black (as the brash Blevins) and the soundtrack. In my view, there has not been a better 'original soundtrack' in my lifetime (age 27). As far as westerns go, it is pitch perfect. The negative reaction to the film undoubtedly prevented this haunting, evocative soundtrack winning an Oscar. While the music doesn't need that validation, it would certainly have helped it sell more!

A quick note on Lucas Black (ably assisted by ET's Henry Thomas), whose performance certainly rated amongst the best of that particular year, but who was again brushed aside when it came to awards. Why we haven't seen more of him on the big (or small screen - American Gothic launched Black) is both confusing and irritating.

Highly recommended - and you should make every effort to seek out the soundtrack too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never knowingly oversold, 31 Dec 2006
By Paul Meakin (Shropshire, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having read the 'Border' trilogy I was reluctant to watch the film. How could justice ever be done to McCarthy's spare, haunting images or the sense of tangible loss at way of life, love and honour now all but gone? The reviews I read didn't inspire me and so when I eventually saw the film I expected nothing but the overwhelming disappointment the critics described. All I can say is that either they are wrong-or I am. The film is a joy: I felt I was watching a sad and haunting tapestry unfold before my eyes. The photography is beautiful, restrained but capturing the essence of space and majesty . This restraint is echoed in Matt Damon's performance-his best ever in my view-as he captures the simple but rugged integrity of John Grady Cole. Penelope Cruz is perfect as Alejandra. I've watched it several times now, and am still waiting for the first hint of disappointment so ardently promised by they that know much better than I: it could be a long wait.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb!, 28 Feb 2005
I was completely absorbed in this film when I first saw it. Damon's sensitivity to his character is finely understated in this haunting human tale of adventure and romance. It is a film in which the silences are as equally important as the dialogue and we are led not on a fast paced romp but an intelligent smoothly paced drama about two men who ride South of the Border, to find suitable cowboy employment. Their adventure leads to unexpected events. The passionate liaison of Cruz and Damon is a joyful reminder of what romantic love should feel like. I found the final 10 minutes of this film unrushed and poignant, affirming the value of friendship and recognising a side of humanity, noble in its resilience of life's trials and capable of a dignified and unsophisticated goodness. I get the impression that Thornton is trying to produce a work with a sense of integrity to the time and place, and where the central characters, refreshingly, are not stereotypical but individuals with their own consciences and vulnerabilities. On the whole it is a superbly stark and brooding adaptation to screen of Cormac McCarthy's novel.
