Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Microsoft has two mapping products, which can be confusing. If you are only looking for route-planning, place-finding and general-purpose mapping, try Autoroute. MapPoint 2002 does all of this too, but its real purpose is data mapping, which is the business of combining data with geographic information. The classic example is where you want to analyse sales by region, taking into account things such as population, average income or occupation type. MapPoint 2002's Data Mapping Wizard is an easy-to-use tool that lets you create a variety of data maps, combining your own figures with its built-in statistics. The product covers the whole of Europe, although the actual data available varies from country to country. In the case of Great Britain, there are nearly 50 data fields which can be displayed at the level of postcode sector, district or region. A postcode sector is a fairly small area, so there is a huge amou! nt of data involved. You can purchase additional statistics from a third party, or of course add your own custom data and territories. MapPoint 2002 belongs to the Office family of products, and there is good integration with Excel, Access and SQL Server for sourcing data. Maps can easily be exported to Excel for further analysis or reporting, or saved as a Web page. The general-purpose features of MapPoint 2002 are handy too, with full route planning, GPS (Global Positioning System) support and the ability to export maps to Pocket Streets, running on a Pocket PC handheld device. This is a bonus: what counts is that MapPoint 2002 is a great value tool for making sense of geographical data. --Tim Anderson

4.0 out of 5 stars Map point Europe - well worth it, 21 Nov 2001
By A Customer
MapPoint Europe is more expensive than some of its competitors and predecessors, but it works!

It loads cleanly and easily and can then be used for route planning, locating places, even for displaying where all your contacts listed in Outlook. Although only a European edition it 'knows' where some pretty obscure places are, even in Korea and Japan!

Making up maps of your own data, e.g. by postcode, is easy. Much easier than using the mapping functions in Excel.

It is simple to use, there are no documents in teh box, but with a few hours work it is easy to see what to do. The route planning (visit all those contacts!) is useful and there are facilities like finding all your contacts within an hours drive, etc. The speed controls and costs need adjustment, but that is simple. It is very fast - a few seconds to work out the route from Reykjavik to Zagreb.

A good product, well packaged. Possibly a bit pricey compared with the competitors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what we needed!, 14 Jan 2003
By A Customer
We ordered Microsoft Map Point after a recommendation from another company. They use it to plan van routes and distribute orders.

It maps for us exactly where are orders are, and shows us their value. We can now see at the click of a button, just where are affluent areas are. It is very simple to see just where orders are, and spot that one order that it miles away from any others, enabling us to plan our routes more accurately.

Very simple and easy to use, and produces some fantastic data that in its first day saved one of our drivers 1 hour from his day.

We will save the cost of the program in a week!

2.0 out of 5 stars No Point in Map Point, 3 Jan 2002
By A Customer
As a management consultant I was eagerly anticipating using this software as a serious strategy tool, but it fell short of expectation.
It is very simple to use but most of its functions can be found for free on the net.
It is marketed as a business planning tool but did not provide me with any where near the capability I would need in order for me to present to my clients. Worse still it will only interegate data from microsoft databases, not much use if you are running a larger system.
If you are looking for a glorified routefinder then maybe you will appreciate it, if you want a serious strategy software look elsewhere.
