Embracing my ''dark kumite'' was a practice that I wasn't too excited about, but after a few viewings of this belated sequel, I'm very glad I did. However, fans of the Van Dammage original may feel short changed by a movie that bears no connection to its predecessor and only seems to exist as a way to make money from an already existing property - so, maybe wise to approach with your expectations at the floor.

As is customary with films of this nature, the story is oh so simple: Thief and martial artist Alex Cardo (unsung action favourite Daniel Bernhardt) gets caught and betrayed by his partner John (Philip Tan) whilst stealing an ancient artefact in Asia. After being placed in the slammer, he is repeatedly tortured by the evil guards - led by the say what you see Demon (Ong Soo Han) until Alex finds a friend and mentor in the form of Master Sun (James Hong), who between cleaning toilets and taking long showers with other inmates teaches him how to fight in the superior fighting style of 'Iron Hand'. In a plot device too many, a "best of the best kumite" is to take place and badboy Demon is the first to get an invitation. Luckily for Alex and Master sun - they too have a way to get Alex invited to this tournament and from here on in, its Kick! Punch! Roundhouse! Repeat!

Between scenes of Alex punching candles and Sun doing some strange business with water in a bowl, we are subjected to a whole host of 1990s kick boxers strutting their stuff and generally beating the bejeezus out of anyone who gets in their way. The action quota is plentiful and although very low on actual emotion and heart, the movie does deliver the bruisery action as and when required.

This film has all the makings to be a great movie but it is the storyline and direction of the film which lets it down so terribly.
With a great cast including mr miyagi (Pat Morita–karate kid) and an up and coming actor at the time Daniel Bernhardt– you would think it would be a great movie but as with many sequels in the 80’s/90’s not a lot of attention is paid to the format of the original film.
In the first Bloodsport the movie is centred around Hong Kong and you really get the feel of the city as all the famous landmarks are included, all the main characters have a good build up, the music has that great 80’s feel to it, all the cast have great chemistry and it is really just one of those great 80’s movies, with Van Damme at his best!
The second Bloodsport is doomed from the beginning, at the start of the film you watch what you think is an extra in the movie, only to find out minutes later that it is the main character, to some degree Daniel Bernhardt is a better actor than Van Damme and pulls off far more moves in this film than Van Damme did in the original but the direction of his character is flawed from the start, you don’t really get a feel of where the film is as in location and the Kumite itself is totally different to the first one, the main villain is just a really bad version of the original Chong Li and you just can’t get behind him as the bad guy as he just doesn’t have the height or frame to be a bad guy – poor casting in that department, the first film really makes you feel like you are a spectator at a live event, the second film doesn’t give you this. It just seems like it was extremely rushed and shot on a low budget.
