Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

For a few years from 1979 onwards, Britain's decaying holiday camps played host to some of the hippest dance events ever, the Soul Weekenders. From Bognor Regis to Caister, soul fans revelled in weekends of live music that included performances by legends such as George Benson and Marvin Gaye, as well as top DJ sets from the likes of Chris Hill and Froggy. The Greatest 80s Soul Weekender is a collection of the greatest cuts from those monumental weekends, which includes Shalamar ("A Night to Remember"), Dynasty ("I Don't Wanna Be a Freak") and Sister Sledge ("We Are Family"). It's also the era when disco and soul finally "hitched up", at last acknowledging their musical compatibility (as demonstrated by "Boogie Wonderland" and "Let the Music Play"). There's also some surprise but well-chosen selections too, including Colonel Abrams's mid-80s fairground classic "Trapped" and Steve Arrington's silky smooth "Feel So Real". What's more it's easy to hear how the soul music showcased on this collection can be intrinsically linked to the style and form of current R&B and garage sounds. --John Galilee

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent retrospective of those sweaty soul weekenders, 24 Jul 2001
By A Customer
Who can forget those days before house and techno when jazz funk and soul were the only genres with the odd smattering of hiphop just emerging.... endless plays of the streetsounds compilation series... and the soul weekender...

We lived for those days..... Steve Walsh was the uks top DJ.... And dance radio hardly existed apart from pirates and the odd spot on Radio London...

Mcfadden & white head summed it up with "aint no stoppin us now" saying weve got the groove!!! this compilation stands the test of time and certainly has the groove... dig out your whistles and white socks and get down to caister.... a revival is long overdue!

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant cd!, 25 Jul 2001
how long have i waited for a cd like this to come out? TOO LONG!! This is 80s soul at its very best. If you liked to strut your stuff to " It's a love thing" or "trapped" then this is the one for you! A great mix of all the best that the eighties had to offer, if you have a party, you wont have to change discs at all. BUY IT !!
