The Korean soprano Sumi Jo is modest with her contributions to her own Christmas album. She sings but seven of the 13 various religious works. Jo's include the opener, the Appalachian carol "I wonder as I wander", which she performs unaccompanied with brightly intoned innocence, and a chaste and dignified version of Mozart's "Exsultate jubilate", the "Alleluia" of which she crowns with an exultant, ringing top C. The disc's other "Alleluia", at the end of Bernhard's cantata "Fuerchtet euch nicht", is a dull one-idea number hardly worthy of her. She sings with fragile silver tone Alessandro Scarlatti's naïve "Cantata pastorale", which pities Jesus for arriving in chilly winter. On the lighter side she includes two versions of Gruber's "Stille Nacht", one in German, the other in English. The German is performed in duet with contralto Barbara Ochs as an oompapa waltz with slightly crude town-band horns. The English is a Jo solo accompanied by violin and twangy fortepiano which gives a homely, sentimental effect. It is used again in Adam's melodramatic Victorian parlour song "O Holy Night" with even more corny results. The pianist is Gottfried Bach, the violinist Hiro Kurosaki. The latter plays a pleasant enough seasonal concerto by Vivaldi. The accompanying orchestra is the always sensitive Capella Coloniensis conducted by Michael Schneider. The VokalEnsemble Koeln broadens the CD with four gentle choral numbers by Bach, Crueger, Praetorius ("Es ist ein Ros") and Scheidt ("O Jesulein suess"). --Rick Jones
