4.0 out of 5 stars Muti lets Scriabin speak for himself, 1 Jan 2003
By Bernard Davis "Bernard Davis" (Birmingham, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
Muti leads The Philadelphia Orchestra in fine performances with the focus on the music itself without overemphasising the composers' mystical worldview. Scriabin's Russian background and debt to Debussy are obvious. His combination of late 19th century musical language with premonitions of modernism is allowed to speak for itself. His gradual progress through the five works towards his own musical language is well mapped.

All performances are of high quality with the best being of Le Poem de l'extase (Symphony No 4: Disc2 Track 4). A feast of Dubussy-like richness. The sound is of similar high quality.

My rating may be on the conservative side - performances are in general well worth 4 stars with Le Poeme d'extase deserving 5.

5.0 out of 5 stars Towerling Performances!!, 9 Dec 2007
By Scriabinmahler (Cambridge UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)

These towerling performance of Scriabin's orchestral masterpieces remains as one of the greatest achievements by Muti and Philadelphia Orchestra (The first choice in Penguine Guide). Especailly the third Symphony and Poem of Ecstasy surpass all existing recordings for its gorgeous sound, masterful timing of silence at crucial moments, gigantic finale and incandescent build-up to each climax. Only Pletnev's account of the Ecstasy can rival the grandeur. Ashkenazy's polite accounts do not come even close.

Other symphonies are equally outstanding too. The first symphony is hugely under-rated masterpiece, full of inspired melodies and superb vocal parts. What a shame Scriabin did not write more for voice! Alexeiev plays piano part brilliantly in Prometeus. Rich Philadelphia sound is beautifully recorded with warmth and amazing dynamic range.
