Director's cut of the third film in the popular cop-buddy series. Detectives Murtaugh and Riggs (Danny Glover and Mel Gibson) are both demoted after triggering a car bomb in a multi-storey car park, but they are soon reinstated after uncovering a network - run by an ex-cop - which is smuggling weapons out of a police ammunition dump.

The lightest of the first three films, Lethal Weapon 3 finds everyone occupying comfortable positions like students who always choose to sit in the same classroom seats. Mel Gibson and Danny Glover return as LAPD partners whose working method consists of the former diving into danger and the latter holding back. (The sequence set in the parking garage of a building, in which Gibson inadvertently trips a switch that makes a timed explosive device speed up, is priceless.) Joe Pesci once again plays a motor-mouth pest, and while the story is pretty much forgettable, it does introduce the best new dynamic in the series, a romance between Gibson and Rene Russo's equally tough but attractive cop. --Tom Keogh --This text refers to an alternate DVD edition.

It is sometimes hard to make a sequel to a great first film, but Lethal Weapon 3 manages to keep the action alive and without leaving you thinking that they should have stopped at Lethal Weapon 2.
In this latest offering Riggs (Gibson) and Murtaugh (Glover) are back diffusing bombs, beating up bad guys, whilst still managing to have a great laugh. The addition of Joe Pesci, (who joined in an earlier movie) to the line up gives the whole thing an added dimension; he's a guy you just love to hate, but can't help loving - a fantastic character. The beautiful Rene Russo brings a further depth to the already great cast.
If you love buddy movies then this one is hard to beat, in fact if you love action or comedy then this one is hard to beat.
Lethal Weapon 3 is a great addition to the set, if you haven't got any of the series then buy the lot, if you can't afford them then sell your bed - you won't regret it!

There is no doubt, the first two Lethal Weapon films were fantastic, with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover making a great on-screen team. The third instalment is just as good, if not better. The pair are reunited with Leo Getz (Joe Pesci) and we have our first meeting with Lorna Cole (Rene Russo). Riggs and Murtaugh are busted down to beating the street after blowing up a building, and after a simple arrest for an attempted robbery, bust open a case with deceit, corruption in the L.A.P.D., murder and violence (after all, this is a Lethal Weapon film!). Murtaugh (Danny Glover) accidentally kills his son's friend, causing him to reconsider his position in the L.A.P.D. and forces him to seek revenge on the people responsible. Riggs (Mel Gibson) as usual gets the woman and causes the most damage in the final scene! Murtaugh faced with imminent retirement from the force decides against it. After all, he's "not too old for this s**t!" A highly recommended action/adventure film with the perfect mix of comedy, a little romance and blistering special effects!

In this third instalment of the popular Lethal Weapon series, Murtaugh is counting down the days till he finally hangs up his badge, but he and Riggs run into an ex-cop who is dealing in special cop-killer bullets.

In total there were four Lethal Weapon films, regardless of quality {they steadily got worse in my opinion} each film made gargantuan amounts of money. Who could blame those involved for milking it for all it was worth if the paying public demanded it eh? Made for $35 million, part 3 went on to make Worldwide $321 million, thus ensuring that a part 4 was inevitable. But is Lethal Weapon 3 actually any good? Was the loyal paying public rewarded for their time?.

Well yes, chances are that if you were already a fan of the series then this does deliver all you wanted and hoped for. Director Richard Donner and his team of writers shrewdly cottoned on to the basic fact that the ante had to be raised. It's a pretty light plot in truth, but enter more explosions, more action and make Riggs more comically reckless than usual, well it's a successful formula; even if Riggs and Murtaugh are now in essence just a comedy double act. Into the mix comes karate-kicking Internal Affairs female sergeant Lorna Cole {a more than agreeable turn from Rene Russo}, who simultaneously gives Riggs more scope for gags and a love interest, and love him or hate him, Joe Pesci again pops in with mirth as the whiny Leo Getz. Stuart Wilson gets to play the bad guy with relish, and to show it's not all about slam bangery and japes, the film also boasts having an affecting strand about kids with guns on the streets; and of course the scum who put those guns in those hands.

It's all very simple and disposable in the world of the popcorn actioner, and yeah! it's not as good as what came before it in the series, but it's still an entertaining night in regardless. 7/10

Martin Riggs finally meets his match in the form of Lorna Cole, a beautiful but tough policewoman.

Together with Murtaugh, the three attempt to expose a crooked former policeman and his huge arms racket.

Crooked cop Jack Travis thwarts them at every turn, mainly by killing anyone who is about to talk.

Murtaugh has personal problems of his own as his family are brought into the equation...

The third time seems a little tame compared to the other two outings, Riggs isn't the dark character that he was, he is more of the comedian in this, waiting to make a one liner or eat a dog biscuit.

Murtaugh on the other hand has the majority of the narrative. He is close to retirement and while the film does touch on age and what he will do when he finishes, it never really delves into the problem.

The same goes for the sub-plot of Murtaugh killing his sons friend, he gets drunk, has an argument with Riggs and drops a lot of F-bombs, it beats counselling I guess.

Plot wise, it's non existent, the bad guys go around with bullets with that look like lipstick and thats about it.

The action scenes are good, but a little more comic book than usual.

But this is Lethal Weapon and one cannot deny that the film is entertaining and very well produced.

I like to think of the Lethal Weapon franchise as a some what polarised object. At one end we have the original, touching on some really dark tones like suicide and depression, and on the other end we have the light hearted buddy comedy with a few explosions and kung fu moves thrown in for good measure.

As the Lethal Weapon series becomes an increasingly cartoonish self-parody, the jokes are starting to get a little tired. Lethal Weapon Two had the perfect balance between the great comic moments and the dark tones of the first film, number three of the series is moving more to the silly side of things.

A proven formula is what allows a franchise to grow old and gray, but Lethal Weapon 3 borrows and replicates the memorable moments of its predecessors so shamelessly that it hardly feels like the franchise is evolving into anything. The squabbling buddy cops Riggs and Murtaugh are still arguing over who gets to drive, how to count to three, and whether Riggs should dive headlong into extreme danger, often without a weapon.

The cast seems to be getting noticeably bigger with every iteration of Lethal Weapon, this provides additional banter but the larger the ensemble gets, the more cumbersome the results seem to be.

Even though there is plenty of action within this film it certainly doesn't score as an action movie, apart from the massive explosion at the beginning, there's little to get excited about among the succession of generally unrelated scenes involving fisticuffs, car chases, and gun battles. The wispy plot about a crooked cop-turned-gun-runner exists mostly to lend righteousness to Murtaugh, who guns down a gangster his son's age during a shoot-out with said illegal weapons.Read more ›
