Along with the "New York Noise" compilations on Soul Jazz and recent re-releases by Liquid Liquid, ESG, Arthur Russell, Pylon, etc., "Anti NY" would appear to be a vital addition to this fashionable reappraisal of the NY post-punk scene. However, for the uninitiated, proceed with caution! There are a couple of nuggets on this album (Vivien Goldman's star-studded "Launderette" and Konk's "Love Attack") and even a previously unreleased track by Gray, a band which featured the late artist Jean-Michel Basquiat - but the rest is the sound of wannabe's trying too hard, boasting barely a single new idea between them. And as for the remixes, they add little to the originals, and seem like a pointless exercise to give some new hopefuls the whiff of NY street cred by association (the exception being the stately reworking of Gray's "Drum Mode" by Paul Mogg).

If the NY post-punk scene interests you, head for New York Noise series and the aforementioned re-releases instead.

A definitive compilation of NY post-punk centred round the infamous Mudd Club, incorporating the dance ethic of disco and reggae, the newly-emerging voice of hiphop, and the experimentalism of rudimentary synths: the first real melting pot world music. The seven original tracks from 1978-82 sound like they could easily have been made yesterday, and the five remixes don't mess around too much with the originals. Can't recommend this too highly if you love raw, vital dance music.
