Synopsis
Duane Bradley (Kevin Van Hentenryck) has a secret in his wicker basket, which he carries with him constantly. Inside is his mutant Siamese twin Belial, who was cut from his side as a child and left for dead. Now the two, who share a telepathic link, have travelled to New York City to wreak bloody revenge on the thoughtless surgeons who separated them. Belial is not about to let anything get in his way, least of all the budding romance between his brother Duane and a beautiful young receptionist.

4.0 out of 5 stars deranged cult stuff, 4 Mar 2004
By A Customer
This is all about low budget cinema with lots of attitude.Cheap gore and New York 80s decadence in a twisted desperation and revenge story.Hennenlotter is certainly no visual master but its all moody and threatening, like Taxi Driver on mushrooms.

5.0 out of 5 stars "What's in the basket?", 23 Jan 2009
By Mr. Matthew J. Lee-williams (Salisbury, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"It's my ... brother." (Basket Case, 1982)

A genuine classic line from a now long-dead breed of early nineteen-eighties cult horror films.

I first watched this film in 1983 when it was released on VHS in the United Kingdom. That summer my friend (who lives in a guest house outside of the small village where I grew up) and I went through a spate of watching horror films (we had just reached teenagehood) - films like Evil Dead, The Burning, Visiting Hours, Deadly Spawn, Halloween III: Season of the Witch and other such splatter films, many of which were subsequently banned for many years.

It is Basket Case that always sticks in my mind, though. Maybe because it was the first real horror film I watched. Maybe because the (little) gore in it at the time made my head swim. Maybe because I was twelve-going-on-thirteen and it was cool to watch a horror film at that age.

Anyway fifteen (or so) years later I ran across this film on DVD (released by Tartan) and just couldn't resist buying it. Nostalgia, I guess. So what's it all about? Pretty straightforward really:

~ Duane Bradley is born a Siamese twin, his brother being a deformed and dwarfed creature. In abhorration, his parents hire three doctors to have the twin removed and thrown into the garbage. Later that night, Duane creeps downstairs and rescues the still-livivng deformity (his brother) and keeps it in a basket, feeding it. Years later Duane embarks on a quest to hunt down and kill the surgeons responsible, releasing the evil twin from the basket to seek revenge ~

This really is a low-low budget film that managed to spawn two sequels - and a reprisal of the Duane Bradley (man with basket) character in the horror film 'Brain Damage' (Kevin Van Hentenryck played the role of Duane in all four movies). But I think you'll like it if you are new to the late-seventies and early-eighties splatterpunk movemenet - or you'll be just glad to perhaps revisit this film once more. I still love it!

Looking back it does resemble the Larry Cohen 'It's Alive' trilogy - somewhat - and yet still maintains its originality. I still love the scene where Duane feeds Basket Case hamburgers!!!!

For me, it's a small aspect of my early teenage years. Make of it what YOU will. But don't be too unforgivivng.

5/5 for nostalgia.

4.0 out of 5 stars Henenlotter's BASKET CASE The Strange Intelligence Of Horror, 6 Sep 2002
By A Customer
Frank Henenlotter's BASKET CASE is a truly disturbing masterpiece. It deals with a frustrated character Belial who is the deformed twin of Duane Bradley (Kevin Van Hwentenryck). The film itself is at times deeply emotional. As you feel sorry for Belial. The fact that he doesn't have much of a life. And also the fact that he wants to be loved, but can't. That does touch on some society issues. So as that as an example this movie has an intelligent plot.

Henenlotter's bizzare atmosphere and original scare tactics make this movie also. He is honest in these outragous scenes of sex and violence which fit the movies character. Although at times the gore is quite graphic and the effects are dated it still has this effect thar grips the viewer. Overall an excellent movie which has its own points to say on family and emotions.
