Martha Masters presents an interesting programme of mostly 20th century pieces, played in quite restrained, but poetic style. She also offers a Bach lute suite to display her baroque credentials...only part successfully: there is some accomplished ornamentation in the Bach but tempos of individual dances lack contrast(the presto in the Preludio is a little too slow, as is the Courante). Soundwise the whole recording is very satisfying, amongst the best in this long running Naxos series.
Of particular interest is a rarely heard set of variations by Oregon composer, Bryan Johanson, a mostly intimate piece & here given an assured performance with magical harmonic sections. The Cavatina is also well performed. Perhaps the Sor "Mozart variations" are out of place on this disc; otherwise lovers of the guitar are well served by this programme.
