This Naxos CD contains music of more interest than volume 2 as we reach the Sibelius of the 1909-1912 period, played beautifully by the highly-talented Havard Gimse. As with the earlier voulmes, the production team captured the piano very well in 1999 and 2000.

There are three works on this CD. First we have Op.58, "Ten Piano Pieces", written in 1909, not long after Sibelius completed his third symphony. This music could not sound less like that work; it's sometimes hard to believe that the same composer wrote these pleasant, not terribly substantial, pieces.

Then we have a jump to 1912 with the Op. 67 "Three Sonantinas". These pieces last for around 6 minutes are are not really like a conventional piano sonata might sound, except that there are three "movements" to each. Most likely written for domestic consumption, the three works drift by nicely.

Finally, back to 1911 for Op. 68 "Two Rondinos". These pieces last for just over 5 minutes and might, according to the booklet notes, originally been written for a more substantial work.

Whilst none of these piano pieces are "important", they are part of the overall makeup of the composer and certainly deserve to be heard. A pleasant way to spend an hour, without too many demands on your concentration.
