Toscanini's performances are better known with the NBC recordings. However, his early recordings with Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra of New York are really representative of his astounding conducting. This CD is, in fact, a good set of Toscanini's performance of Beethoven, in which he excelled. The Fifth is thundering with Toscanini's fast tempos (only 6:18 for the first movement, the fastest of his recordings: the early one with NBC in 1939, and the late NBC in 1952); it is one of the best performances I ever heard of the Fifth. It was recorded in 1933. The Seventh symphony which follows is just another touch of Toscanini's art. This has the privilege to produce here, for the first time, two "takes" or records of the first movement, which have been placed back-to-back, so the modern listener can choose between them, which may sound quite similar. This CD is very hard to find in US. I got an exemplar from London. Good music for Beethoven's lovers under Toscanini's baton.

Toscanini's recordings with NBC are well known. But his early performances in New York are much more representative of his astounding conducting. Beethoven's fifth sounds thundering and overwhelming with Toscanini's fast tempo (6:18 minutes in the first mvt versus Furtwangler's pounding and superb performance of the 1st mvt in 8 minutes). The 7th symphony which follows is just another touch of Toscanini's art, which should absolutely be heared by whoever loves Beethoven's symphonies. The transfer is quite good. This is cd is very hard to find in US. I asked my nice wife to hunt up one while she was in London. Good music.
