Felix Da Housecat has been rocking heads since back in the day with his quirky, retro sounds. His new album Kittenz and the Glitz is as adventurous as anything he's done to date, and wears his pre-1990s influences starkly on his sleeve. Starting out with "Harlot", an energetic track that captures the seediness within the futurism of synth-pop, Felix takes us on a ride through myriad takes on the 1980s sound. Joined by guest vocalists Melissa and Miss Kitten (as well as himself), and other producers including Junior Sanchez, Harrison Crump and Tommy Sunshine, the veteran producer dives into an indulgent but accomplished project that is often capable of dazzling brilliance and innovation. Interludes such as "Analogue City" and "Electro Fly" live up to their titles, owing much to the often dark, electro sounds of bands like OMD and Human League while tracks such as "Madame Hollywood" and "Happy Hour" add a slightly harder, industrial edge. But it's not all doom and gloom; Felix comes up with songs like the beautiful "Pray For A Star", a beautiful song with soaring vocals, slap-bass funk and elevating strings, as well as the uplifting piano chords and old skool vibes of "Sequel to Dub", both of which break things up nicely. --Paul Sullivan

Chicago acid house wizard Felix da Housecat released KITTNZ& THEE GLITZ in 2002, adding to a growing catalog of outlandish dance music. Pulsing with his patented grooves and retro textures, KITTNZ is more overtly sexual than some of Felixda Housecat's other releases (especially the theatrical vocal cameos of Miss Kitten), but that only adds to the slinky glamour of the tracks. "Happy Hour", "Glitz Rock", and the Junior Vasquez collaboration "Control Freaq" are among the hip-moving, electro highlights.
