Back Cover: Medieval Transylvania. His homeland seized by Turks, his father cruelly buried alive, Prince Vlad Dracula returns home from exile on a mission of destiny and revenge.

A fearless leader, he vows to reclaim all that rightfully belongs to him and his people… no matter what the cost. On his quest he shows no mercy, slaughtering common criminals, corrupt noblemen and villainous clergy alike.

As the stories of Vlad’s unquenchable thirst for blood, spreads throughout the land the legend of Dracula the Prince of Darkness is born.

Synopsis
DARK PRINCE: THE TRUE STORY OF DRACULA tells the story of Vlad the Impaler--the historical model for Bram Stoker's Dracula. At first, it seems that director Joe Chappelle and screenwriter Tom Baum might have been influenced more by Errol Flynn and THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD than by Bram Stoker. Vlad--like Robin--is a dispossessed noble, and a patriot who fights the occupation forces of the Turks (rather than the evil usurper, King John). Vlad (Rudolph Martin) meets his Maid Marion, Lidia (Jane March) and finds a Little John--the hulking Bruno (Christopher Brand). The King of Hungary (Roger Daltry) becomes Vald's ally and, with his support, Vlad and his men attack the occupying Turks and turncoat Romanian nobles.
Then, the movie changes tack, and its mood darkens. Lidia discovers what Vlad does to the bodies of his enemies--and she is horrified. When Lidia has a child, Vlad takes control of the boy, and banishes her to a nunnery. Then, Vlad's brother Radu (Michael Sutton) arrives at the head of a large Turkish invasion force. In the end, DARK PRINCE reveals why and how the historical Vlad acquired his notoriety--and spawned Bram Stoker's Dracula.

5.0 out of 5 stars At long last Vlad the Impaler, 11 Dec 2002
By Ken (Ireland) - See all my reviews
After viewing almost every Film based on the novel by Bram Stoker, it is refreshing to see the (as close as it gets) historical account of the Infamous Vlad Dracul of Romania.
Hailed by his people as a hero. Condemned by the Orthodox Church and other nations as a bloodthirsty butcher, and antichrist. The tale of this dark prince is full of everything that makes a good horror.Believable characters, good performances(even Roger Daltrey is pretty ok),lashings of gore, and a creepy atmosphere. Theres also a bit of a tragic love story thats handled well. Altogether it makes for great entertainment. If you have an Interest in the Origins of Dracula get this, or be deprived of a great Movie

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Inspired, 16 Feb 2004
How wonderfully refreshing to watch a film about Dracula's pre-fangs incarnation. If youre looking for vampire erotica, shape-shifting and Abraham Van Helsing youd be better off revisiting Bram Stocker's Dracula (another great flick).

This is not a vampire film. This is an historical account of prince Vlad Dracul who sought to avenge his fathers death and Romanian oppression under the Turkish Ottoman Empire. The Dark Prince unfolds the tragic biography of the man who later became known as the legendary Dracula. Rudolph Martin is simply exquisite as prince Vlad. A remarkably underrated film that is a must for all history/horror lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars dracula meets Braveheart with epic results!, 28 Oct 2003
By A Customer
No, it's not yet another adaption of the Bram Stoker novel, infact it's more of a history lesson. But a very very entertaining one. Full of action, gore, kick-ass stunts and fantastic battle scenes this is a must-see movie.

With an eerie atmosphere from start to end, i don't believe that this can be classed as just a horror, it's more. I would say this is a true epic. With an absolutely fantastic performance from Rudolf Martin (who played Count Dracula in Buffy the Vampire Slayer). His creepy and at times moving acting add to the scary atmosphere.

You have to see this film to believe it!

The price is fantastic for such a film. Take my advice, BUY IT.

3.0 out of 5 stars Neither Stoker's Dracula or the historical Vlad the Impaler
I had long thought that a movie about Vlad the Impaler, the historical figure that was the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula, would be a good choice for a film. Read more
