5.0 out of 5 stars This one is not to be missed, 16 Nov 2001
By A Customer
What a delight! This really is a concert not to be missed.
21 Brian Wilson/Beach Boys songs performed by a wide variety of artists and by the maestro himself. The Wondermints band cooks magnificently throughout and expertly reproduces even the most complex arrangements required.
There are many high spots. The set kicks off (Our Prayer) and ends (Love and Mercy, featuring Brian) with the superb harmonies of the Boys Choir of Harlem. Paul Simon does a self-accompanied, winsome version of 'Surfer Girl'. Evan and Jaron in regulation Beach Boys striped shirts, make a very good fist of 'I Get Around'. So does Billy Joel with 'Don't Worry Baby', Darius Rucker and Matthew Sweet with the anthemic 'Sail on Sailor', and Heart with the tough challenge of 'Good Vibrations'. Aimee Mann and Michael Penn have just the touch needed for the haunting 'I Just Wasn't Made For These Times'.
Brian himself, in very good form, cuts the mustard excellently, in particular with 'Heroes and Villains', 'Fun, Fun, Fun', and 'Love and Mercy'. Now for the real standout items. 'In My Room' is given a brilliant trio performance by Carly Simon, Jimmy Webb and Dave Crosby, (Dave was prepared to travel from California to New York just to sing the part). 'Surf's Up' teams Webb and Crosby with Vince Gill who handles the demands and intricacies of this most testing of pieces like the master vocalist he is. And, if all of this is not sufficient, try Vince's fabulous interpretation of the elegiac 'Warmth of the Sun', written by Brian hours after President Kennedy's assassination. This just has to melt you away.

5.0 out of 5 stars Could do without Ricky Martin............, 7 Mar 2003
By A Customer
........at the end of the day he sings more than Paul Simon, which can't be a good thing. This said his performance isn't that bad that I feel the need to deduct a 'star'

Excellent tribute bringing together world famous to well know artists. Vince Gill's performance of Warmth Of The Sun and his part in Surf's Up (with David Crosby & Jimmy Webb) is outstanding. To comment on the rest would be to praise almost everyone who took part in the show.

Excellent choice of tracks as well, which highlights the genius that is Brian Wilson

If you like The Beach Boys and enjoyed Brian Wilson at the Party In The Palace, buy this without hesitation.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sound Quality, 1 April 2005
The sound quality on this DVD is poor. Seems to come and go. Had to turn the volume almost full blast but it was still fading. We did record the concert from the Performance Programme to our Sky Plus which is excellent but wanted to free up space by buying the DVD. Think we'll be keeping the recording.
