Where this package wins out over its competitors is in the number of formats and styles offered for conversion--fancy a Microsoft Word version of your latest typed creative writing masterpiece? No problem. Even better, it can turn workaday print documents into HTML pages for upload to the Web. It has to be said its HTML leaves a lot to be desired but for the vast majority of people this won't be an issue.

Also interesting in this release is the inclusion of facilities to convert PDF files to a variety of "other" formats--including plain text and even Excel, this is very simple operation to action and the rendering of even quite complex files is impressive--with very few exceptions there's no difference between the original and the copy, which is impressive.

For proofing purposes, ScanSoft provide some useful tools, including an intelligent correction engine which learns from any changes you make during the scanning process and a nifty read-back utility which utilises a speech engine to give aural feedback once scanning is complete. The read-back facility actually works really well, even though its pronunciation can be a little weird at times.

For the truly international document keeper, 114 languages in three character sets are supported, making it about as comprehensive as it's possible to get and the whole software package is wrapped up with a neat and functional interface that's easy to navigate without losing the user.

In all, Omnipage 11 is a fantastic tool for anyone needing OCR capabilities, offering much more in terms of value for money than many of its competitors. --Chris Russell
