5.0 out of 5 stars The other side of John Williams, 19 Jun 2002
By Marcus Horatius (Bucks) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
If you only know John Williams from his movie scores, then this disc will be a long-overdue surprise. Williams is a capable and sensitive composer of concert music, especially gifted at the individual expression of a concerto--he has a real sympathy for solo instruments and his skills as an orchestrator make sure that he is able to showcase the lyricism of the soloist with sensitive orchestral accompaniment. The Violin Concerto has been recorded before, but this is a new and revised version given a definitive performance by the composer and Gil Shaham.

That said, arguably Treesong is an even better work, and a suitable companion to his extraordinarily beautiful Five Sacred Trees (for bassoon and orchestra), previously recorded on Sony (Amazon asin = B000024FSB). Both discs are simply essential for anyone who wants to understand John Williams as a composer.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise, 2 Jan 2003
By Bernard Davis "Bernard Davis" (Birmingham, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
I bought this CD on the offchance and was pleasantly surprised.
In film music John williams can pour on the sacharine and rack up the Bombast. But here he reveals himself as a master of expression and orchestration.

This first two works on this disc inhabits a well realized dreamworld. The music is not so far from that of Szymanowski creating a more sparcely orchestrated more clearly defined version of his sound world.

Treesong is the highlight: a distillation of the compositional ideas in the Violin Concerto. In it the violin is allowed to sing in Debussy like fashion above sparse but beautifully appropriate accompaniment.

The Three Pieces from Schindler's List are pleasant but serve mainly to highlight how much better the two 'serious' works are.

The playing of violinist Gil Shaham is excellent throughout
