Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Of all the laudatory epithets applicable to Barbara Bonney, "radiant" might not be the one that springs to mind--at least, not insofar as it suggests the warm luxuriance of sunshine. Bonney's light, bright lyric soprano is something else: a voice of delicate refinement and transparent, pure-toned beauty. But it's capable of silkily seductive textures too; and there are wonderful examples on this compilation disc that, if featuring a less well-established artist, might qualify as a demo tape. Most of the tracks are previously issued but together they define her capabilities and home-base repertory, from Bach, Purcell and Mozart through to Scandinavian song and Richard Strauss. With "Morgen", "Solveigs Sang", "The Presentation of the Rose" from Der Rosenkavalier and "Ach, ich Fuhls" from The Magic Flute, this is a catalogue of silver, if not golden moments. Jewel-like singing and pure joy to hear. --Michael White

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sublime Presentation, 2 Jul 2001
By A Customer
This is a superb compilation. It provides new listenerS with a fine indication of Ms Bonney's great artistry and refreshes the ear of the more experienced listener. There are some gorgeous tracks here taken from the back catalogue of Decca stretching back to her days recording the Mozart operas with Arnold Ostman - how refreshing to hear Mozart conducted and sung this way. An antidote to Karajan, Levine and Barenboim. We also have some tracks from her latest album, FAIREST ISLE with a simply ravishing account of Dido's Lament from Purcell's Dido and Aeneas- unusual to hear it sung by such a bright-voiced soprano but it works magnificently. Time and time again Ms Bonney ravishes the ear (I know I have used that word already, but anything else simply won't do!) There cannot have been a more perfect performance of Strauss's MORGEN than here, delicately accompanied by that Rolls Royce of pianists (Ms Bonney's words, not mine) Malcolm Martineau. The climax of this disc is a simply ecstatic performance of 'The Presentation of The Rose' from Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier with Susan Graham. After the release of Deccas STRAUSS HEROINES with Ms Bonney, Ms Fleming and Ms Graham I was very disappointed that this scene was missing. I am very glad that it was recorded and it appears here for the first time. I have nearly every performance on this disc anyway, but I shall be buying this disc in order to have these miraculous few minutes of pure heaven. Susan Graham and Barbara Bonney sing Strauss together. What could be more perfect?

3.0 out of 5 stars too much ice and not enough fire, 31 Jan 2005
Barbara Bonney does have a lovely voice, which technically cannot be faulted. But oh so dull and a little clinical !! Wonderful if you want to fall asleep, not so good if you want to be moved, excited or impassioned.More like Nicole Kidman than Sophia Loren, more like taffeta than velvet.Too much Stephen Hendry, not enough Jimmy White.
