Congratulations to Melbourne House and Infogrames for this fabulous racing game! The Le Mans mode, where you race against 23 other cars, is the game's centrepiece. You can race from 10 minutes in increments up to - for the truly dedicated - the full 24 hours. But there's plenty more to the game. Featured alongside the Le Mans circuit are several other tracks, on which the game's Championship mode is run. You begin in the GT class, and progress to open and closed prototypes, unlocking cars as each series of races is successfully completed. The graphics are fantastic - the amount of detail on the cars is staggering, and a lot of work has gone into the circuits and scenery too. You can see the build up of rubber on the track around each braking point. Although the reflections off your car don't seem to be a true reflection of the surrounding scenery (check out what happens when you go under a bridge), it's very convincing. It's a shame that the cars you're racing against don't have this detail. The pit stop sequence is the best I've ever seen - fully animated, you can also see other pit-stopping cars in the background as yours is worked on. The graphics come into their own when racing at night - the rear, and especially the headlight effects are breathtakingly good. The multitude of trackside lights - and the revolving big wheel at Le Mans - complete the effect. The graphics are matched by the gameplay, which is excellent. The cars handle convincingly - up there with GT2 - and it's a pleasure to see the computer controlled cars racing wheel to wheel and falling off the circuit without any prompting. The difficulty level is just right too. It's difficult to win a race on expert/hard level, especially as you move through the game - one mistake can cost you half a dozen places - but not frustratingly so. Alongside SSX, this is the most satisfying game I've played on the PS2, and I definitely won't put it to one side when GT3 comes out - it's that good.
