Youre initially put in the role of a GDI Commando in the ongoing fight against the Nod, with the chance to try out all the weapons and vehicles--which are an integral part of the game--that were introduced in the early titles in the franchise. Indeed, for the first hour or so, the sheer novelty of experiencing all this from ground level is engrossing enough, coupled with some early frenetic action that you cant help but enjoy.
It does follow the template set by other first person shooters mind you, albeit backed by a constantly evolving mission, for while there are elements of strategy, much of the game ultimately boils down to running around, shooting, destroying buildings and upgrading your weapons.
The game really comes alive in multi-player mode though, with capture the flag, deathmatch and free for all fights included. More interestingly is the more traditional Command and Conquer mode, with two sides building up their own bases whilst attempting to destroy their opponents. Undoubtedly ideal fodder for some late night sessions.
Yet while Command & Conquer: Renegade is, overall, an enjoyable first person shooter thats hard to dislike, it isnt the best out there. It doesnt capture the tension and atmosphere of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, nor the intense action of Return to Castle Wolfenstein. And while its undoubtedly good, mindless fun, Westwood still have some work to do if theyre to capture this genre in the same way theyve taken the RTS world.--Simon Brew
Manufacturer's Description
Command & Conquer Renegade is a fast-paced 3D action game set in the gripping Command & Conquer universe. For the first time, experience the Command and Conquer universe up-close and personal as you fight it out on the ground among the structures, vehicles and weapons made famous in the original C&C.
You assume the role of Havoc, elite GDI commando who fights and explores from a first or third-person viewpoint. Battling through exotic indoor and outdoor environments, you're free to use both brute force and stealth in your mission objectives against the evil Brotherhood of Nod.
As the Global Defense Initiative's last, best hope for victory, you'll wage war against the diabolical Brotherhood of Nod using not only a vast array of weapons but more than a dozen vehicles from the Command & Conquer universe. You'll be able to zip around on a rocket bike, fry enemies with a flame tank or throw down death from above in an Orca Fighter.
Command & Conquer Renegade promises an intense multiplayer experience with a variety of team play options as well as deathmatch variations. Multiplay will be supported through Westwood Online, an online gaming service with more than a million members.
