4.0 out of 5 stars You've got to fight for what you want..., 1 Oct 2001
By A Customer
From the opening bars of the theme music it all comes flooding back, yes, school holidays were great in the 60s. Presented here are the final episodes in their entirety, with no editing out of opening and closing credits. As an additional 'bonus' the 'rarely seen' last episode is presented as the French version (perhaps the English version was lost). This comes with different music and titles, as well as burned on English subtitles. Quite why advantage wasn't taken of DVD's subtitle and audio features is a mystery to me, as I would have preferred to see it dubbed into English. As it isn't dubbed you do get to hear the actor's real voices as well as all the background noises that are lost in the dubbed episodes. There are no special features on this disc, just the usual episode/chapter selections, no subtitles and only one soundtrack. Quite why the last episode is 'rarely seen' beats me as a BBC transmission date is listed on the box, maybe it wasn't transmitted when repeated as the story does conclude (in rather an open way) with the previous episode. This then sees our 2 heroes struggle against the odds (and an ill-placed orchestral score) to bring the French delegate to the peace conference, and then deliver the cease-fire order to the Spanish in time to prevent a massacre. The last episode wrapping up the love story between the Chevalier and the Contessa as well as showing a side of Guillot not seen in the previous episodes. All in all a fine slice of kids retro and I for one can't wait for the release of 'Belle and Sebastian', 'The White Horses' and 'The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe' on DVD.
