Amazon.co.uk Review

Bomberman has been around since 1990 and has starred on console system s as diverse as the Sega Saturn and the Nintendo 64. Consistently great gameplay makes it one of the few series that can always be counted on. Fortunately, the brand new Bomberman Tournament for Game Boy Advance is certainly no exception--it's a classic, through and through, with stellar gameplay and simplicity, all combined with a generous helping of action.

It features a simple single-player quest mode, but it is in the multiplayer option--you against up to three computer opponents or friends over a network of GBA units--that the full potential of the franchise is realised.

The puzzle-style gameplay is simple even for those new to the series. You've got to lay time bombs that trap your foes or obliterate them. Bombs also destroy obstacles and collect power-up tiles that give you new powers. Once all your opponents are destroyed, you win the level.

Typically, Bomberman's single player modes have been for practice, but this outing stretches the gameplay with eight large cities and a handful of dungeons. Bomberman is sent to destroy the enemy, including six giant bosses, and save the world in a somewhat Zelda-like environment. Yes, it actually has a plot and it's not bad for such a simple game.

The graphics are simple but well animated and the music is straight out of the previous games, including the stirring Bomberman theme song. The single-player quest is worthwhile, but taking on a friend in head-to-head combat is still what the game is all about. It's the best of both worlds and perfect for a handheld. --Andrew S Bub, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Bomberman meets Pokemon, 12 Aug 2001
By A Customer
I bought this game purely for the frantic multiplayer fun that can be had with the four player link option. I've always been a fan of Bomberman so I new that it would be an addictive and immensely playable game. I wasn't disappointed.

What I didn't expect was that the single player game would be so good. A mix of Pokemon style RPG (including 'pets' that you train and battle with) interspersed with the classic Bomberman style levels where you have to blast yourself a path to freedom.

An excellent game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bomberman (with a touch of zelda?), 29 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This game has two parts: the traditional bomberman battle "arenas" and a quest mode. The battle arena is pretty much the same as found in the old SNES versions but it is the quest mode that has kept my attention. The style of the quest mode reminds me of playing zelda on the SNES, and whilst not quite as good, will certainly hold your attention for the duration of the game. A worthwhile purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent, 1 Dec 2001
By A Customer
I recently bought a game boy advance and with the package I bought this game. I had never played this before and found it really interesting. You can even choose which game mode you can use. This is an excellent choice and in the magazine got a 96% rating.
