5.0 out of 5 stars Great NYC bands and the only place to hear Black Beetle!, 4 Jun 2003
Well, I'm a bit biased being a big fan of Joan Wasser, Jeff Buckley and The Dambuilders, but this CD is a priceless gem. This 2 CD set features the only commercially available track by Black Beetle, the New York 'supergroup', featuring Joan Wasser, former Dambuilder and Jeff Buckley's last lover (of 2 years standing), and Michael Tighe and Parker Kindred (both members of Jeff Buckley's backing band). The song featured here is 'Vanish' and it is superb. I was a bit nervous when I first got the CD because I was worried that the track wouldn't match my expectations, but it did and in fact it surpassed them. It is truly sublime, and features some great horns too, which surprised me. Great stuff.

But don't let my focus on my obvious personal obsessions detract from what is an amazingly varied collection of great 'alternative' Brooklyn music. This collection ranges from trad country to hardcore, and to my ears two of the best tracks are from 'The Bird Watchers' and 'Bees and Flowers'. However, there is shedloads of great guitar driven music on these two CD's and if you're at all interested in recent US indie music, I'd urge you to invest in this set. And make sure you listen to the Black Beetle song. It's a modern tragedy that they disintegrated before they could release anything else. Listening to 'Vanish' makes that tragedy all the more poignant.

Buy it now, while you still can, and if it helps by buying it you're helping the plight of needy animals in NYC!
