5.0 out of 5 stars 21st century music from the grandfather of modern folk, 21 April 2004
By amboline (York, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
The songwriting of Tom Paxton - a founder member of the New York folkscene of the 50s and 60s which also gave us Bob Dylan and Joan Baez - isthe benchmark by which are measured, not only all modern protest songs("Peace Will Come"), but a fair proportion of nursery rhymes too ("Daddy'sTaking Us to the Zoo Tomorrow"). It comes as a bit of a surprise, then, todiscover that not only is this genial legend still alive, but stilltouring and writing thoroughly 21st-century friendly material that is asgentle on the ear as it is fierce and challenging on the heart. "UnderAmerican Skies" is a collaborative work with songwriting partner AnneHills, whose vocals are also very much in evidence on the album and whichlend a richness to the music which puts most of today's young songwritersto shame.
The easy, guitar-led, melodic sound of Paxton and Hills is immediatelyaccessible to anybody who enjoys folk, country or olde-timey Americana aswell as to those whose taste is more contemporary. There's a certaindelightful tweeness in the nostalgia for home, in "Follow That Road", orfor old loves, in "And Lovin' You". Age has mellowed Tom Paxton's voice tomake it perfect for such ballads; in fact he sounds better on this albumthan he's ever done. But the sweet notes belie the fact that the bulk of"Under American Skies" has a real kick to it underneath. From the openingchorus of "There Goes the Mountain" it becomes clear that part of Paxtonand Hills' agenda is to deliver a set of thoroughly 21st-century protestsongs to challenge the complacency of modern American society and thosewho lead it, whether it be questioning the death penalty (on the titletrack), environmental exploitation ("There Goes the Mountain"), thetreatment of foreign nationals in times of war (the beautiful "Manzanar"may have been set 60 years ago, but the parallels with today are all tooevident) and the current administration's stubborn defiance of publicopinion both at home and abroad ("God Bless the Grass"). Powerfulrenditions of a couple of almost-forgotten folk songs ("Birmingham Sunday"and "Well Well Well") are a reminder of the rich heritage of Americanmusic and in places add a slightly Gospel feel to the album, whilstensuring that the sacrifices of those who made the past better arecelebrated even when the present comes in for so much criticism. Theoverall tone of "Under American Skies", then, is one of hope that thingscan and will change for the better, and that there is plenty of scope formusic to challenge and change the world.
In short, this is one of the most intelligent, well observed, andbeautifully performed albums it has been my pleasure to listen to.Unquestionably a five-star effort.
