Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Lunasa introduced a new rhythmic complexity and harmonic sophistication to traditional Irish music on their self-titled 1997 debut. The trio of fiddler Sean Smyth, flautist Mike McGoldrick and uilleann piper John McSherry supply the melody, and they negotiate the twists and turns of the intricate jigs and reels with a technical virtuosity and sense of joy that recalls the legendary Bothy Band. But, as good as these three are, the heart and soul of the band is the rhythm section of bassist Trevor Hutchinson and guitarist Donogh Hennessy. Together they explore the subtle rhythmic variations and harmonic possibilities implied by the tunes. They don't impose a new order on the old melodies, but instead bring out a richness that was always there. Although the recording quality is not quite up to the standards of their later releases, the addition of a bonus live track recorded in 1996 and the sheer exuberance of their playing make this an essential recording by one the most important Irish bands to emerge in the 1990s. --Michael Simmons

5.0 out of 5 stars The first of the very best, 1 Nov 2009

(REAL NAME)
The first album of the one of the best Irish traditional music bands ever. The must have for all those who like Irish traditional music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very impressive début, 23 April 2007
This is a very impressive début album: the first track gets you going and the musicality doesn't let up: the second section of the first track is wonderful and more Irish bands should experiment with the fantastic mixture of Breton dance and Irish instrumentation. Some tracks sound very similar to Flook, not surprising given the mutual link of Michael McGoldrick. Extremely melodic music and a pleasure to listen to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful and uplifting, 16 Mar 2005
i heard this for the first time in a music shop in Dublin, and bought it immediately. This is definitely Celtic music, but Celtic music of a very different sort.

Many of the tunes - and particularly Eanáir - have a drive to them, and a fullness, that folk music doesn't often possess. The closest I could get to conveying the effect, if you haven't heard it, is that while folk-rock brings rock instruments and styles into folk music, this does it the other way round. The instruments are folk instruments, the rhythms are Celtic, but the impression is rock.
