Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Live at the Fillmore East, March 1970 presents a previously unreleased window on the inception of jazz-rock and Miles Davis's involvement in it. Leaning heavily on the soon-to-be-released Bitches Brew and looking back no further than 1962's "Masqualero", the quintet rumbled, squalled and stomped through two sets that might have surprised even fans of Davis's new rock-influenced sound. At times edgier than even the challenging Brew, the music was non-stop, polyrhythmic and crashing while remaining groove-orientated. With Miles blowing one aggressive solo after another, saxophonist Wayne Shorter and drummer Jack DeJohnette rise to the moment while providing reminders of the angular sound of Miles's 1960s group. While "Bitches Brew" itself appears in a drastically shortened but still relatively hushed treatment, the first of two versions of "It's About That Time" breaks away from the mid tempo meditation of In A Silent Way into full-tilt tumult. These 90 minutes capture Miles headed in the direction of Jack Johnson, stopping to give the rock audience a glimpse of him working at another peak. --Rickey Wright

CD Description
The creative vision of Miles Davis was at its most mercurial in the late '60s and early '70s. He advanced the language of jazz (and pop) not just with each album, but practically with each gig. A perfect case in point is this live two-discset. LIVE AT THE FILLMORE EAST is like manna from heaven for Miles fans, its nine cuts all previously unreleased performances from a formation of Miles's band that didn't stabilise long enough for a studio release. A considerably differentversion of this band had recorded the groundbreaking BITCHES BREW not much more than six months before this Fillmore appearance, but the record released as AT THE FILLMORE in 1971, featured yet another incarnation, sans Wayne Shorter, whose last gig with Miles is captured here.
Accordingly, thisrelease finds Davis and cohorts in transition between the abstract jazz-rock of BITCHES BREW and the funkified, modal jams of subsequent recordings. The two sets documented here draw largely from BITCHES BREW, but the variations just a fewmonths down the line are startling. Chick Corea's ring-modulated electric piano creates a Stockhausen-like maelstrom ofsound, while Shorter plays some of the most daring, freewheeling solos of his career. Dave Holland splits the difference between funk, rock, and jazz, joining with Jack DeJohnette's roiling drums to forge a tumbling sonic carnival ride. The entire band blazes through every tune working on all cylinders, making a monstrously joyful noise by which the rest ofus are still edified, even decades after the fact.

5.0 out of 5 stars A TOUR DE FORCE, 26 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Being a huge fan of Davis' prodigious recorded output throughout his long and multi-faceted career I very much looked forward to this release. I was not disappointed. From the opening bars of 'directions' this band give it their all. The tension quickly builds up and never ceases throughout the duration of this double cd set. This is in my opinion the best live album release so far of material from Davis' 'electric period. Far better than Dark Magus, Live Evil and the previous Fillmore East/West albums. The tunes on this album are much tighter and more coherent than most of those on previous recordings of this material. On Black Beauty for example the musicians often sound as if they are in conflict, with everybody seemingly doing their own thing, resulting in a cluttered barrage of noise. This album by contrast boasts six highly gifted musicians very much in sync' with one another. the result is an uplifting 'tour de force' of a performance. This album ranks alongside the Bitches Brew studio album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blistering, 30 Aug 2001
By A Customer
The first track Directions sets the tone for a pulsating, exciting set. A harsh, raw sound adds to the excitement. Better than previous live recordings from this period being more compact and "together". Sounds like they had been playing this stuff for a year or more. If you hate electric Miles ,stay away. If not buy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Scorching set from Miles' last real quintet, 24 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This is uncomfortable listening but marks a high point in the electronic improvisation from the quintet which had been the core of the Bitches Brew recording outfit. Miles and Chick Corea rip into the new tunes like Spanish Key and it is not surprising that is goes straight over the heads of the audience. 30 years on, this can be seen as the apotheosis of one of the themes of Miles' music: Anger. As he said in his autobiography this "... was a mother of a band." He wished it had been recorded and it was. Here it is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb players, fair recording.
Compare this with "Black Beauty", recorded a month later with much the same band (Steve Grossman had replaced Wayne Shorter by then), and much the same set list. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear - what a disappointment!
If, like me, you relish the thought of a totally new Miles Davis release, then you rush out to the shops on Day One and get home from work as soon as you can to spin that disc. Read more
