Amazon.co.uk Review

Fran Rubel Kuzui's 1992 tongue-in-cheek vampire comedy is sugar-coated horror, an unusual mix of the cute and scary, with a splash of postmodern pop nonsense to give culture critics something to think about. Kristy Swanson plays a Valley Girl who learns she belongs to a line of ancient vampirekillers. After training under the watchful eye of a mentor(Donald Sutherland), she becomes a spandex-wearing, kung-fu kicking, stake-stabbing babe and the mortal enemy of a narcissistic master vampire (Rutger Hauer). The accent is all on cheery attitude, though the action can be as authentically unnerving as any other halfway decent monster movie. Paul Reubens, formerly Pee-wee Herman, has a small role as Hauer's fanged familiar.--Tom Keogh

4.0 out of 5 stars Bear in mind it came years before BTVS the TV series, 23 Oct 2000
By A Customer
As a standalone film this isn't half bad. I saw it years before teh series was even commissioned and like it then. yes the TV series is more polished, but lets face it they have hours and hours to achieve the same ends. Rutger Hauer hams it up with some style, Donald Sutherland is no Giles but good as always (though not as good as he can be) and Kristy Swanson demonstrates far more attitude as Buffy than SMG was ever allowed to because this is where Buffy finds out she is the chosen one, where she wrecks her school (for the first time!) and is changed from popular into slayer...something series always alludes to, but never really demonstrates. This is a good film in it's own right and provides a good back story for some of the series plotlines. Definitely worth seeing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great funny film, 11 May 2001
By A Customer
This film does rock. It was the original and only Buffy at the time, and although it got panned by the critics it developed a cult following, and then of course years later the Buffy we all know and love was developed from this.

This film is not meant to be taken seriously, the action scenes are well put together, and the acting is great, but it is only meant to be lighthearted fun - some of the lines from both Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry just prove this.

Nobody should really compare this with the current series as, it was a stand alone film, it gave a good insight to the beginnings of a great character, but to make a series work you have to make adjustments especially if you hope for it to run for series after series.

All in all great film, very funny, Luke Perry is to die for, definite modern classic.

1.0 out of 5 stars No Way!!, 11 Sep 2003
By A Customer
If you really want some vamp killing action stick to the series of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, not the film! The Buffy in the film looks like she couldn't snap a twig let alone fight the forces of evil. my judgement may of been clouded by watching the series but this film is just rubbish, I wonder how they ever talked networks into making the series.
