Transport Tycoon Deluxe is a great management sim where you get to be lord of a burgeoning transport empire. You start off in 1950 and through "real-time" (one month is a couple of minutes) into the 21st century, some cash and a quest to build the best transport network in the locality (like Sim City but with the buildings taken out).

The concept is very simple--run goods from where they're supplied to where they're in demand, make a profit, try to get subsidies/monopolies and drive your opponents into bankruptcy. The scope of the game is huge. You can go over land, sea and air. The graphics still look great considering that the game is several years old now and the sound effects add to the atmosphere. New additions to Transport Tycoon Deluxe include several new world environments which are more in the fantasy realm, such as sub-arctic, sub-tropical, Toyland, a world scenario editor--so you can simulate your own real world area as well as heliports and "maglev" trains and tracks. You can also sell and buy shares in opposing companies in a bid to put them out of business.

In terms of multiplayer you can either play the computer or play over a LAN and the manual says that the opposing AI is smarter and gives you a more realistic opponent, laying better transport networks and recognising where to invest and where to close unprofitable lines more efficiently than before. At the harder difficulty settings, the computer opponent is not that easy to beat. Basically if you like management sims you won't find a lot more challenging and entreating than this classic. --Charles Kent

I bought this game after hearing how good it was and also I am a great fan of the RollerCoaster Tycoon franchise so buying Chris Sawyer's first game was perfect. But it will not work on an NT operating-system (Windows 2000, NT 4.0, XP)

The one great thing about this game is that it is not a one locomotive simulator such as Railroad Tycoon, in this game you get to build roads, railways, airports, harbours and buy trains, planes and automobiles. Also it is like SimCity as you link cities together and if you get a really good transport system going the cities will expand from the money made and villages can turn into giant cities.

The graphics are 8-bit, 256 colours, but in 1994-1995 they were amazing, they differ slightly to RollerCoaster Tycoon as less colourful and detailed. The music can sometimes get annoying but they are only old batch MIDI files so I can live with that. They did not have such adavance systems in those days.

Now people have been saying in their reviews about a patch from openTTD and ttdpatch.net which will make the game work on XP, but this "replay" version may state Windows 95 on it but it is the orignal DOS version so a no-go for NT systems. But it will work perfectly with 95,98,ME or any DOS system.

One of the great simulaton games to date and still adored and played by many people.

If you can get hold of this game, which as it is here, obviously you can then buy it! This is the best game of it's kind around, I've had it for years and still play it. I have all the others, Traffic Giant, Rollercoaster Tycoon (All editions), Sim City 300 Uk, Railroad Tycoon all instalments and Sim Hospital, but none of them can ever replace this games realism and sheer addictiveness. The learning curveis perfect and difficulty can be tweaked to perfection. Hostile takeovers add to the addictiveness as you watch small companies start to improve their services and profits only for you to step in and buy them over taking all their vehicles, stations and more importantly their highly profitable routes.

This was the first game i ever loved.Even now it is an amazing game. The only problem is that it does not run on new computers with newer versions of WIndows. As the game is so good i have kept an old computer, just so i can play it. For people without an older computer, or for those who just want to play a newer game, i would strongly recommend Locomotion which is also a very good game, with a very similar concept.
