I suppose I knew what I would get. I have this on a washed out old DVD, and thought this would/might be better. It isn't. It is watchable of course, and I do like this kind of film (sometimes). The story is typical, but it's Ladd that you want to see, and boy is he miscast? Too old, small, and tired, he does his best, but he just doesn't fit this kind of role. What T. Young is doing co directing goodness knows, it's all a bit of a mess, but quite fun mess, just don't expect mint quality prints. Price and delivery excellent and I can't honestly say I am disapointed, I don't expect a better print exists, rather like Young's other Italian epic "Amazons/War Goddess" (now there is an oddity if ever I saw one!)

HASH(0x98640c3c) out of 5 stars Good Sword and Sandal Film saddled with a disappointing transfer 8 Sept. 2005
By Gary A. Smith - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD Verified Purchase
This was one of Alan Ladd's last films. It tells the story of the Horatii brothers in the very

early days of Rome when the Romans were fighting against the Albans for control of

the land. This is a good entry in the Sword and Sandal genre but the Diamond DVD is

not very good quality. Also the running time of DUEL OF CHAMPIONS is 105 minutes and the DVD runs only 90. The long out of print VHS from Lightning Video was a much

better transfer and was the full running time too. If you have it, hang on to it.

HASH(0x98544cfc) out of 5 stars Duel of Champions 4 May 2006

A first time after many times,I'm sorry to say that the quality of this DVD was very poor. The original VHS version I recorded was originaly better quality - also widescreen. Perhaps they will come out with a more high quality version. It would have cost me more to send it back than I paid for it. So I put it up to experience.

Kindest Regards

HASH(0x980535d0) out of 5 stars Good film, bad DVD. 5 Dec. 2010
By CelticWomanFanPiano - Published on Amazon.com

It is a mystery to me why this very good film has been relegated to a dime store quality DVD. The story line centers around the Roman legend concerning the three brothers who fight for Rome against the three brothers who represent the Albans. It was a pivotal moment in Roman history as it marked the beginning of Rome's conquest of the Mediterranean. Some of the acting is a little overly theatrical. And Alan Ladd is up in years. However, I found this movie to be nonetheless captivating and worthy of five stars.

HASH(0x97ed4090) out of 5 stars One of Allan Ladd's last movies. 13 Jan. 2015
By Charles van Buren - Published on Amazon.com
First let me say that those who complain about the video quality are absolutely right. It is terrible & interferes with the enjoyment of the movie. Despite Amazon's description, there is nothing about West Point or the American Civil War. I will now leave all of that & review the movie. Alan Ladd made this in 1961, near the end of his life. He had a supporting role in 1964's THE CARPET BAGGERS, but died before the movie was released. Some critics note that Ladd looks tired in this movie. I would point out that, while he was apparently in poor health, his character, Horatio would have been tired & haggard: A forced march; a battle in which he is wounded & knocked from a steep hill; the fight in the wolf pit; escape; a long recovery from blood loss & infected wounds; disgrace; his fiancee married to his brother & more. Maybe, in addition to his poor health, Ladd was acting. In my opinion this is not one of Ladd's best movies. However, if you like sword & sandal movies this is better than most which I have seen. If you can overlook the awful transfer quality you may enjoy the movie. My four stars are for Alan Ladd & the movie, not for this particular video. If the review system allowed it, I would give the movie 3 1/2 stars rather than 4.

HASH(0x98833ccc) out of 5 stars Poor DVD Quality 1 May 2011
By GT - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD Verified Purchase
I purchase this video new on a Platinum label. It is of poor quality and appears as if it was videotaped, slightly out of focus, from a movie screen through a hazy window. It is not widescreen and, in fact, the conversion to full screen is done poorly. There is also an annoying hiss on the audio track. The film would normally be four or five stars but, due to the poor quality, I give it no more than two stars, and that is probably being generous.
