Offering more than two-and-a-half hours of music, The Romance of Korngold bridges the classical/film music divide presenting a portrait of one of the last great romantic composers. The first CD finds rousing action from the Errol Flynn swashbuckler The Adventures of Robin Hood, as well as a suite from Between Two Worlds and love themes from Escape Me Never and The Prince and the Pauper. However, with the exception of a foray into orchestral jazz for the charming Baby Serenade the majority of the music comes from the concert hall proper. It is regrettable there are only two of the four movements of the String Quartet No.2, likewise that there is just an extract from the Symphony in F. The one complete large-scale work is the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, and bringing the anthology to a close with a fine performance by Gil Shaham and the LSO under André Previn. Indeed, while one may argue over including so many works at the expense of cutting some, these fine performances will prove a excellent introduction to a still often very underrated, wonderfully romantic composer; the two extracts from the early opera The Dead City proving rapturous by any standard. --Gary S Dalkin
